Acorn & BBC User Group (ABug) NORTH 31 Jan HALIFAX

Post by sydney »

Hi all.
Following on from the successful user group meeting on the 22nd of November I'm pleased to announce the second Acorn & BBC Micro User Group NORTH meeting! We asked the attendees at the first meeting if the 7th of February was ok and the answer was a resounding yes, unfortunately the venue is booked on the 7th and the rest of February is out for me and Dave so we've gone for the 31st of January. I have the booking on hold until tomorrow night but if I book it there will be no problem in cancelling if the date turns out to be completely unsuitable.

The more observant of you will have noticed the change in name for the event, this is purely to give a nice acronym - ABUG - which looks and sounds a lot better than BAUG.

We have the room from 8am - 10pm on Saturday the 31st of January. If there is interest we could also get the room on Sunday the 1st of February for a morning or full day.

We're looking for £12 per attendee to contribute to the cost of the conference room and hire of additional tables (Arcadian and I will cover any shortfall) and if there's any cash leftover it'll go towards soft drinks/snacks for the weekend or possibly booking the room for Sunday morning if there is interest. That's in addition to your own individual cost of a hotel room for one or two nights if you want to stay. There are also plans for a curry on the Friday night so please mention if you will be joining in.

The meeting, as always, will be pretty informal though I do plan to have some recent games written by Tricky, jbnbeeb and myself (and anyone else!) out for play testing. There is the possibility of hiring extra tables so there should be room for a lot of interesting things to be done so please let me know in this thread if you will be bringing something or if there is something in particular you'd like to see.

There are limited spaces available so please post in this thread and send me a direct PM/email to check availability and have your name added to the list. It would be useful if anyone who attended the first meeting could let me know if they won't be coming.

I know I missed the Friday nosh this time (due to traffic) but I'd certainly be up for eating out on the Friday again (doesn't necessarily have to be Ziggys, Ian! ;) ).

Don't remember being asked, although I did leave earlier than most #-o

Anyway, I'm up for that, and for the curry too. Ziggy's was a bit "special" so I'm happy to go elsewhere!

It's in my calendar and I want to come, but it's a long way for me, flynnjs and anyone else this end. Wouldn't be so bad if I had any annual leave left so I could take the Friday off, but I only have 1 day left until next April now. :/

I think I'm going to have sit on the fence and just see how things play out. I almost certainly wouldn't be there until late Friday again, which means I'd be coming all the way up for just a single day, probably with most people leaving on the Sat evening. flynnjs did look at the rail options for us which might make it an easier trip ...

The rail is a heck of a lot easier for us to Wakefield as it shaves over an hour off.

I drive past Wakefield on my way to Halifax so meeting you there and driving on to Halifax wouldn't be a problem.

I've added everyone who has replied positively to the confirmed list, if you'd prefer to be in the tentative list pm me and I'll move you. I'm going to start a new thread in 'General' about an ABug meeting later in 2015 possibly being held further down south. I'll link to it when it's up.

No conference room there (I'd already checked).

Also, Premier Bradford South has a dedicated block of meeting rooms (I visited a few days ago) but a) it's very expensive compared to Halifax b) it isn't open on weekends - which rules it out for us altogether.

Just paid, thanks, to confirm my place. As I live quite local, I shall arrive early Sat morning and leave Sat night, so no Friday curry. :(

But look on the bright side - there will be more rooms available for those who need them.

I though Ziggy's did a good tandoori when I went to meet up in August. It also had the advantage of catering for some of the guys that didn't like spicy food. Perhaps it was a bit busier on the Friday night and they didn't do so well?

Still, a change of venue would be fine I'm sure

The food wasn't actually bad, and for £11 including a couple of beers you can't really moan. Basically as long as I've got curry and beer in front of me I'm happy

I won't touch spicy stuff, but the pizza I had there back in August was great, so I'd have no qualms about returning to Ziggys.

But not everybody was impressed with the food there, hence my suggestion that we could look at going somewhere else if that's what folks wanted.
