Created in February 2023... here is Games Disc 169.
Disc169.zip
(126.62 KiB) Downloaded 58 times
The disc is called Disc169.dsd so it can be loaded into a Datacentre on a real BBC without having to rename it.

The 18 games on this disc include...

OXO (2P) (E) (10 Of The Best Vol.4) from The Electron User (3.06).
Cubit by John Richardson.
Battlot from Inufuto.
Black Hole (E) (STD) from Electron User Group (62).
Colour Match by ???
Space Invaders from Telesoftware (Ceefax).
Escape From Jail (STD) from 8-Bit Software (Issue 18).
F For Freddie (Flight Simulator) from Kansas City Systems.
HiLo (9 Classic Card & Board Games Vol.2) from Database Software.
Grouse Shooting (Arcade Challenge) (Hack) from Brilliant Computing.
Pontoon (AKA Pontoon Party) from Personal Computing Today (3.07).
Norca Park Race Course (E) from The Electron User (6.10).
Noughts & Crosses from 8-Bit Software (Issue 19).
Polymer Picker (V1.1) by Stephen Scott.
Find The Ace (V1.00) from BBC PD (Disc 38).
Moneycrazy (E) from The Electron User (2.07).
Clear 35 from 8-Bit Software (Issue 28).
Aerial from Inufuto.

NOTE: OXO and Black Hole are both Electron titles that seem to work OK on a BBC Micro.
Also, Black Hole and Escape From Jail allow you to save your score/position to a blank disc.
Also, due to a minor graphics fault with BeebEm 4.14, Escape From Jail does not work properly. However, it has been modified to detect BeebEm 4.14 and patch the problem. It works normally with B-em 2.2 and on a real BBC Micro.
Lastly, Moneycrazy is an Electron title that has been amended to run on a BBC Micro.

COMPILATIONS: OXO from The Electron User was later released as part of their "10 Of The Best Vol.4" compilation.
Also, HiLo from Database Software was released as part of their "9 Classic Card & Board Games Vol.2" compilation.
Lastly, Grouse Shooting from Brilliant Computing was released as part of their "Arcade Challenge" compilation.

INSTRUCTIONS: The instructions for OXO and Norca Park were created from their magazine/book.
Also, the instructions for Battlot and Aerial were created from their original Japanese instructions on the author's website.
Lastly, the instructions for Pontoon were created from its magazine/book.

SPECIALLY CREATED INSTRUCTIONS: The instructions for F For Freddie were not part of the original tape release and were created specially from its inlay.

MAGAZINE TYPE-IN GAMES: Pontoon from Personal Computing Today was only available as a type-in from their magazine.

HACKED GAMES: Grouse Shooting from Brilliant Computing was originally a Switch game but has been hacked to allow you to select the keyboard as well.

DOWNLOADED FROM TELESOFTWARE: Some games were available as downloads via teletext services such as Ceefax or Oracle using a BBC Micro teletext adaptor. Some games were also available from other sources such as Micronet 800 via a BT Prestel modem.

EASTER EGGS: If you press ESCAPE during some of the loaders and instructions, then you can skip to loading the game... This only works for F For Freddie.

All original filenames have been kept where possible, but some have been changed where they conflict with the limitations of the Disc Filing System. Copy protection routines have been removed.
This disc has also been checked for *KEY related issues and is OK.

Disc 170 will be out soon!

Mick.

PS. The latest version (V1.1) of Polymer Picker is now on this disc.

I can't get Tanks to work in BeebEm, although it seems to work fine in JSBeeb and b2.

Any idea why?

MAGAZINE TYPE-IN GAMES: Knights, Space Invaders, Stunt Car and Reversasquare were only available as a type-in from their magazines/books.

*DTRAP/DATACENTRE: Jigsaw Puzzles from Ega Beva has to reset the disc drive with a *DISC command so requires the command *DTRAP to be used on a real BBC Micro with a Datacentre fitted if playing via USB.

Hi,
Just re-posted Disc095 in Section 6 as Adventure 10: Savage Island Pt1 from Adventure International has been modified by a Forum member to fix a possible bug and allow for a better chance (17% instead of 15%) of selecting Beach when on the Raft.

I don't think that's quite correct. Forgive my pedantry, but I believe that what had happened was that the intended probability of 15% (for selecting the Beach), which had presumably been assigned by Brian Howarth (the original programmer of the Elk/Beeb version of the game), hadn't been implemented correctly: there was a bug in the random number generator in the game code, and it meant that it was almost impossible for the game to select the Beach!

So, yes, the bugfix has raised the actual probability of the Beach being selected to 17%, but not from 15% -- rather from something close to 0%. (As I understand it.)

Hi all,
I have just re-posted D076 in Section 5 thanks to a bug being found in Space City at lines 170 and 200 which has now been corrected.
This was a type in game from Beebug and part of the text from mag 1.08 was missed.

Hi all,
I have just re-posted D076 again in Section 5 due to the old version having an extra bit of unofficial text added which gave a highscore. Although great, this was NOT in the original Beebug 1.08 mag listing, so that version has now moved to ALTD016.
I have check several Beebug mags after this to see if they issued the extra text, but haven't found anything so far.
If anyone else knows where this came from then please let me know so I can amend my database.

Space City is now as per original listing except the ON ERROR RUN routine added by me.

The disc is called Disc173.dsd so it can be loaded into a Datacentre on a real BBC without having to rename it.

The 18 games on this disc include...

Sevens (V1.19) from 8-Bit Software (Issue 33).
Detective (E) from ASP Software (Argus Press).
Battlezone (RAM) (STD) by Rocketeer.
The Business from Telesoftware (Ceefax).
5-A-Side Soccer (STD) from 8-Bit Software (Issue 14).
Driving Test! (Keyboard Hack) from BBC PD (Disc 83).
Laser Zone (AKA LaserZone) (V1.2a) by Shaun Lindsley.
Wordbox (2P) (STD) from Telesoftware (Ceefax).
World from Himap.
Cracky from Inufuto.
Soko-Ban (V0.3) (C/B) by 0XC0DE.
Crazy Maze (World Of Newton) from CET (Longman).
Battle Ships (AKA Battleships) from Duckworth (BBC Programs Vol.1).
Magic Maze (AKA Maze) by ???
Guess Who (STD) (WTD) from 8-Bit Software (Issue 26).
Hangman from Telesoftware (Ceefax).
Inkosi from Chalksoft Ltd.
Ayo from A & B Computing (1.09).

NOTE: Detective is an Electron title that seems to work OK on a BBC Micro.
Also, Battlezone allows you to save your score/position to disc. Make sure the disc is write-enabled and the filenames BZ0 to BZ3 are unlocked if you want to save. This option only becomes available when using a Master 128 with &E00 DFS and not when using a BBC Micro B.
Lastly, 5-A-Side Soccer and Wordbox allow you to save your score/position to disc.

WRITE TO DISC: Guess Who allows you to save your score/position to disc. It also allows you the option to add data and will save parts of itself back to disc. Some files may have been left unlocked ready for this and you will need to write-enable this disc if you want to save to it.

COMPILATIONS: Crazy Maze from CET (Longman) was released as part of their "World Of Newton" compilation.

INSTRUCTIONS: The instructions for Cracky were created from the original Japanese instructions on the author's website.
Also, the instructions for Soko-Ban were created from sources off the internet.
Lastly, the instructions for Battle Ships were created from its magazine/book.

SPECIALLY CREATED INSTRUCTIONS: The loader/instructions for Battlezone were not part of the original release and were created specially from sources off the internet.

LOCKING/RESET: Soko-Ban by 0XC0DE requires both CTRL and BREAK pressing together after playing the game to prevent the computer from locking up due to code being stored low down in memory.

DISC DOCTOR. This ROM can interfere with certain games. Battlezone has a Disc Doctor ROM detector routine added to avoid graphical corruption.

MAGAZINE TYPE-IN GAMES: Battle Ships and Ayo were only available as a type-in from their magazines/books.

RAM: Battlezone by Rocketeer requires 1 spare bank of sideways RAM in order to work. It was released on disc with a file that loads into RAM. It works OK with BeebEm 4.14 upwards and B-em 2.2 and should work OK on a real BBC Micro with Sideways RAM or with a Datacentre fitted.

DOWNLOADED FROM TELESOFTWARE: Some games were available as downloads via teletext services such as Ceefax or Oracle using a BBC Micro teletext adaptor. Some games were also available from other sources such as Micronet 800 via a BT Prestel modem.

HACKED GAMES: Driving Test! was originally released for the BBC Micro as a Joystick only game. This version has been amended to work with both a Keyboard and a Joystick.

EASTER EGGS: If you press ESCAPE during some of the loaders and instructions, then you can skip to loading the game... This works on Battlezone, Laser Zone and Inkosi.

All original filenames have been kept where possible, but some have been changed where they conflict with the limitations of the Disc Filing System. Copy protection routines have been removed.
This disc has also been checked for *KEY related issues and is OK.

Disc 174 will be out later this year!

Hi,
I have just re-posted Disc060 in Section 4 thanks to a Forum member reporting a "No Room" error with Knight Quest from Beebug.
The original game was loaded at &1100, but I have now added a downloader to shift it to &E00 to allow more room.

Created in September 2023... here is Games Disc 174.
Disc174.zip
(115.63 KiB) Downloaded 463 times
The disc is called Disc174.dsd so it can be loaded into a Datacentre on a real BBC without having to rename it.

The 18 games on this disc include...

Lines (The First 30 Programs) from CET (MicroSmile).
Hangman from 8-Bit Software (Issue 47).
Gremlin Maze by S. J. Birbeck.
Sherlock Holmes And The Birthday Party from The Micro User (5.01).
Blue Wizard Adventure by Brian Tierney.
National Race from 8-Bit Software (Issue 48).
Road Racer (Ten-Liner Game) (E) from The Electron User (4.07).
Wargames (AKA Combat Zone) (2P) (STD) from A & B Computing (3.08).
3D-Maze (The Next 17 Programs) from CET (MicroSmile 2).
Escape from BBC PD (Disc 83).
Cruiser (Hack) from Popular Computing Weekly (2.27).
Time-Bomb (E) from The Electron User (2.10).
Lunar Module from What Micro?
Super Star Trek (V3.0h) by electron.greg
First Class Mail (AKA Postman Knocks) (E) from The Micro User (10.04)
Power Bandit from J & J Software.
Pussycat (Unreleased) by Mike Goldberg.
Go-Pig (E) from The Electron User (5.06).

NOTE: Road Racer and Time-Bomb are Electron titles that have been amended to run on a BBC Micro.
Also, Wargames allows you to save your score/position to disc. Make sure the disc is write-enabled and the filename BAT1945 (created by me) is unlocked if you want to save to it. There is also the option to create your own battles using the 2 files named BAT32K and SEA32K that are stored on side 2 of the disc (due to space limits). Also note that this version is the Mode 4 BBC Micro version only. The magazine listing also featured a Master 128 version which is not included here.
Lastly, First Class Mail and Go-Pig are Electron titles that seem to work OK on a BBC Micro.

DISC VERSIONS: Blue Wizard Adventure is the full version and has graphical files on both sides of this disc (as per the original game).

RE-RELEASES: Super Star Trek by electron.greg was originally released in 1984 by Jeff Law and Allen Hill and their original version will be included on the next ALT disc.

COMPILATIONS: Lines from CET (MicroSmile) was released as part of their "The First 30 Programs" compilation.
Also, 3D-Maze from CET (MicroSmile 2) was released as part of their "The Next 17 Programs" compilation.

INSTRUCTIONS: The instructions for Sherlock Holmes, Road Racer, Wargames, Cruiser and Lunar Module were created from their magazines/books.

SPECIALLY CREATED INSTRUCTIONS: The loader/instructions for Lines and 3D-Maze were not part of their original releases and were created specially from their instructions and disc menus.
Also, the instructions for Power Bandit were created from sources off the internet.

MAGAZINE TYPE-IN GAMES: Wargames and Lunar Module were only available as a type-in from their magazines/books.

DOWNLOADED FROM TELESOFTWARE: Some games were available as downloads via teletext services such as Ceefax or Oracle using a BBC Micro teletext adaptor. Some games were also available from other sources such as Micronet 800 via a BT Prestel modem.

HACKED GAMES: Cruiser seemed to have various graphical issues with its original listing. This version has been amended slightly and features graphics that may be more in line with what the author intended, without the game becoming something else. Note that this game is hard in places, but it can be completed.

EASTER EGGS: If you press ESCAPE during some of the loaders and instructions, then you can skip to loading the game... This only works on Wargames.

All original filenames have been kept where possible, but some have been changed where they conflict with the limitations of the Disc Filing System. Copy protection routines have been removed.
This disc has also been checked for *KEY related issues and is OK.

Created in October 2023... here is Games Disc 175.
Disc175.zip
(84.06 KiB) Downloaded 421 times
The disc is called Disc175.dsd so it can be loaded into a Datacentre on a real BBC without having to rename it.

The 18 games on this disc include...

8-Teen (STD) from 8-Bit Software (Issue 41).
Birthday (TMU Anniversary Game) from The Micro User (2.01).
Codebreaker (AKA Codebreak) (E) from Elbug (1.09).
Liverpool Manager (STD) from 8-Bit Software (Issue 10).
OXO - Heuristic Naughts & Crosses (E) from The Electron User (5.12).
Reversi from Silverlind.
Mushroom Invasion (Sixty Programs For The BBC Micro) from Pan Books Ltd.
Rat Catcher (AKA Ratcatcher) (E) from The Electron User (4.01).
20-Four (STD) from 8-Bit Software (Issue 43).
Maze Race (Me & My Micro) (E) from Acornsoft/NEC/Yorkshire TV.
Truffle Hunt (One-Liner Game) from Beebug (3.07).
Tidbits Teaser from The Micro User (8.08).
Justified Sadism from BBC PD (Disc 120).
Dynamic Maze (AKA Dynamaze) from Micro Update (Issue 2).
Dollar Dash (E) from The Electron User (7.02).
Air Raid (E) from Elbug (2.06).
Tenebra by Haplo.
Aliens from BBC PD (Disc 83).

NOTE: 8-Teen and 20-Four allow you to save your score/position to disc. Make sure the disc is write-enabled and the filenames 8TNDAT and T$DAT are unlocked if you want to save to them.
Also, Codebreaker, OXO , Rat Catcher, Maze Race and Air Raid are all Electron titles that seem to work OK on a BBC Micro.
Also, Liverpool Manager allows you to save your score/position to disc. Make sure a blank disc is write-enabled and any files you want to save to are unlocked.
Lastly, Dollar Dash is an Electron title that has been amended to run on a BBC Micro.

COMPILATIONS: Maze Race from Acornsoft was released as part of their "Me & My Micro" compilation for the Electron. A book was also published by Yorkshire Television in association with The National Extension College.

INSTRUCTIONS: The instructions for Birthday, Codebreaker, OXO, Mushroom Invasion, Truffle Hunt, Tidbits Teaser, Dynamic Maze and Dollar Dash were created from their magazines/books.

SPECIALLY CREATED INSTRUCTIONS: The loader/instructions for Reversi and Maze Race were not part of their original releases and were created specially from their inlays and books.
Also, the instructions for Tenebra were created from sources off the internet.

MAGAZINE TYPE-IN GAMES: Mushroom Invasion and Dynamic Maze were only available as a type-in from their magazines/books.

EASTER EGGS: If you press ESCAPE during some of the loaders and instructions, then you can skip to loading the game... This works on Reversi and Justified Sadism.

All original filenames have been kept where possible, but some have been changed where they conflict with the limitations of the Disc Filing System. Copy protection routines have been removed.
This disc has also been checked for *KEY related issues and is OK.

Enjoy!
Mick.

Hi,
Just re-posted Disc128 in Section 16 as the author of Scramble has posted a new fixed version. Note: However, the fixed version only applies to the version that works under B-em and on real hardware and not the copy that works under BeebEm.

Also, re-posted Disc169 in Section 29 as the author of Polymer Picker has posted a new updated version (V1.1).

This version should work on everything except beebem without the 6845 fix that I don't think it's in main, but I have only tested it on my beebem, my b-em and hardware.

The fix is for the saucers that are only affected by some shots.

Castle Hassle (Unreleased) by Mike Goldberg.
Santa's Dilemma (E) from The Electron User (5.03).
Bomber (Me & My Micro) (E) from Acornsoft/NEC/Yorkshire TV.
Cannonball Battle (Cassette 50) from Cascade Games Ltd.
Silly Santa (E) from The Electron User (2.03).
Flagged (AKA Flagger) from A & B Computing (1.05).
Light Bikes (Hack) (35 Educational Programs For The BBC Micro) from Personal Computer World (PCW).
Santa's Saucer from The Micro User (1.10).
Cosmic Intruders from Paean Systems.
Minefield (AKA Minefield 3D) from Eduquest Software.
Santa's Tour (E) from The Electron User (5.03).
Solitaire (AKA Solo) (E) from Elbug (2.02).
The Big Unwrap from The Micro User (6.10).
Power Ball (E) from Electron User Group (55).
Hangman (E) from The Electron User (1.03).
Yahm (36 Challenging Games) from Interface Publications.

NOTE: Puzzle, Santa's Dilemma, Silly Santa, Santa's Tour, Solitaire, Power Ball and Hangman are Electron titles that seem to work OK on a BBC Micro.
Also, Bomber is an Electron title that has been amended to run on a BBC Micro.

RE-RELEASES: Light Bikes from Personal Computer World (PCW) was also released by them on their "Educational Programs For The Electron" compilation. It may also have been released by Model B Computing on side 2 of their MIA Cassette 11 tape.

COMPILATIONS: Bomber from Acornsoft was released as part of their "Me & My Micro" compilation for the Electron. A book was also published by Yorkshire Television in association with The National Extension College.
Also, Cannonball Battle from Cascade was released as part of their "Cassette 50" compilation.

INSTRUCTIONS: The instructions for Puzzle, Snowvaders, Santa's Dilemma, Flagged, Light Bikes, Santa's Tour, Solitaire, The Big Unwrap and Hangman were created from their magazines/books.

SPECIALLY CREATED INSTRUCTIONS: The loader/instructions for Castle Hassle were not part of its original release and were created specially by me after I adapted and finished the code for this game.
Also, the instructions for Bomber were not part of its original release and were created specially from its inlay and book.

MAGAZINE TYPE-IN GAMES: Flagged, Light Bikes and Yahm were only available as a type-in from their magazines/books.

HACKED GAMES: Snowvaders from the Micro User has been modified by Colin Hoad to reduce the amount of flicker on the screen when the Invaders move left and right.
Also, Light Bikes from Personal Computer World (PCW) has been amended as your Light Bike could run outside the grid, so a procedure has been added to check and stop bikes from leaving the grid area. However, If you are in 2 player mode with the computer's bike selected and the computer's bike hits the boundary then it is vaporized and players 1 and 2 can then go outside it (as per instructions).

EASTER EGGS: If you press ESCAPE during some of the loaders and instructions, then you can skip to loading the game... This only works on Snowvaders and The Bi Unwrap.

All original filenames have been kept where possible, but some have been changed where they conflict with the limitations of the Disc Filing System. Copy protection routines have been removed.
This disc has also been checked for *KEY related issues and is OK.

Many of the games on this disc have Christmas themes.

Merry Xmas
Mick.

PS. The Cosmic Intruders tape is still MIA. The version here was posted by its author and the Paean loader was added by me for completeness.

Disc 178 will be out in the new year!
