I've only recently discovered the BBC Micro and would appreciate recommendations for the best games to try first. I'm especially interested in adventure games. Thanks!

In that case, I'd start with Twin Kingdom Valley if I were you.

Also, Lancelot and The Magic Crystal are other good games.

I think Level 9's Lords of Time is one of the best adventures ever written although you may have played this on other platforms. Other noteworthy games for the Beeb include:
  • Citadel
    Repton 1, 2 & 3
Codename Droid: Strykers Run Part II
Elite (the best and original 8-bit version)
    Labyrinth
    Revs
    Ravenskull
    Castle Quest
    Thrust
    Exile
Palace Of Magic (almost a Citadel sequel, certainly worthy of it)
    Imogen
    Frak!
    Cholo
    Sabre Wulf
    Knightlore
    Atic Atac
In terms of adventures I'd consider:
  • All the Adventure International (you either love them or hate them)
    Colossal Adventure
    Adventure Quest
    Dungeon Adventure
    Snowball
    Return to Eden
    The Worm in Paradise
    Red Moon
    The Price of Magik
    Emerald Isle
    Gnome Ranger
    Gnome Ranger II: Ingrid's Back
    Lancelot
    Scapeghost
    Rick Hanson
    Project Thesius
    Myorem
    Village of Lost Souls
    The Hunt
Escape from Enthar 7 (loved this)
    Assassin
    Island of Xaan
    Acheton

Heyley games published a couple of good adventures:

I think these were released via Robico.

And if you're feeling creative, download "The Quill" or the "Graphics Adventure Creator" and write some adventures yourself

Adventure games seem to have been well covered above, but if you fancy venturing further afield, I would definitely recommend:

Elite (Master 128 / 6502 enhanced version available) - 3D space simulation
Exile (also enhanced version available) - arcade adventure
Thrust - skillful, arcade
Ravenskull - arcade adventure
Chuckie Egg (with Rich's new extra colours loader patch: http://www.stairwaytohell.com/forums/vi ... .php?t=586) - addictive platformer
Repton - arcade puzzler

Plus any of the hundreds of others classics ... ;)

Slightly more leftfield suggestions would include Nutcraka, Chichen-Itza, Boffin, Ransack, plus - if you like sport - Holed Out!

The Beeb version of Tetris has tricky controls, but plays a very fast game if you can master them.
