Adverts

Post by melchett »

Is anybody else out there starting to find the ads on this site more and more intrusive? I particular hate the "floating div" adverts that appear over the message board for about five seconds or until you hit close... Hmm... maybe it's about time I configured my Adblock settings in Mozilla Firefox correctly.

Ok, agree that the ads have become annoying as hell, so I've enabled the "Community Chest" option to allow users to contribute towards the purchase of "Gold" Community Status (which would mean the ads disappear).

TBH I'd be surprised if (m)any folks consider this worthwhile due to the low volume of use this board sees. But what the hell, to start the ball rolling I've contributed 5 bucks (about £2.80) ... any more for any more?

Btw, when I get the time I'll prolly mirror the *main* site on another server that doesn't require me to insert an ad script on every html.

Seeing as I raised the point I felt I'd better contribute... just added another $5 to the fund although for some bizarre reason I've been listed as -Anonymous-.

If it's a problem, maybe there could be another forum?
There's no way on earth I'm going to be blackmailed by EZboard like this. If they don't want to provide the service without deliberate inconvenience then time to say goodbye IMHO.

Only just managed to get this account set up (it kept moaning that the email address was already registered, even though it had never actually worked).
It seems clear that EZBoard are the worst type of operation out there, pushing spam ('offers') at every opportunity with no obvious way to avoid it, and popping up pop-ups everywhere. I'm sure this is somewhat out of Dave's control.

Anyway, if you use Mozilla Firefox, with judicious use of the AdBlock plugin, you can remove the ads and the pop-ups, and then still donate to Dave via the website, rather than letting any cash go to the EZBoard cowboys!

Yeah.
STH Administrator - hope you can get that money out of the Community Chest then and use it to support this site (other than giving it to EZBoard). Take my contribution as a small xmas present if you can

Also, the ads now appear between each of the appends on a particular thread, which is damn annoying. Assuming you have a PHP enabled hosting service, have you seen phpBB? It's free and open source and available from www.phpBB.com/

Just thought I'd mention it

Hmmmm... it would also appear that the embedded ads cause the page to automatically reload too and clog your back button history if you stay on the same page for too long.

I've been meaning to migrate to phpBB for a while now, but the appearance of those ghastly embedded ads have made me want to do it all the more hastily.

This morning I've begun creating an ad-free UK mirror of the main website. I'll let you know when it's ready. Hopefully, a phpBB-powered board will follow soonafter.

I'm afraid that 10 bucks is locked away in the chest, so I might just top it up to the $18 (or whatever it is) required to make the ads go away for 3 months. At least that way, the board will be a little more pleasant to use whilst we transition.
That's a shame about the community chest - I hadn't thought that you wouldn't have access to it... wish I'd just PayPal'd it (or similar) direct to you now.

Appreciate that it's going to take some time to migrate the message board but it IS a great feature of this site. It's a shame in a way as EZBoard hasn't done a bad job over the years, it's just the last six months whereby they've tried to force groups to contribute money. phpBB is very good though although worth reading up about that Santy Worm virus which has been plaguing installations over the past few days:
