Codename: Droid - what were these for?

Specifically, the spanners and the plutonium rods. What do they do, apart from not letting you complete the game if you don't pick them up? And that chip on Surface Defence 3, after the jetpack?<br>

I think you were supposed to engage your imagination a bit and assume the plutonium rods were supposed to be used to power the Z11 spacecraft? Could be wrong though...
