There seems to be quite a few older chip families going EOL around June/July time. I suspect the manufacturer of whatever elderly fab equipment is used to make them has had enough and ended support, forcing the few chip fabs still on such an old node to move on to something newer.

They're still making the ez80, but it has some minor compatibility issues and isn't available in PDIP format.

Captain Zilog has a sad, I guess. I'm not sure if the Z80 has/had enough military applications for that legacy chip company (whose name, of course, temporarily escapes me) to buy up the assets, archive them, and wait for the right price.
