16-Bit podules on an A4000

Post by IanS »

I posted this on discord the other day. It's fairly trivial to use 16-bit podules on an A4000 (or A3020) by using BD8-BD15 that are generated for the IDE bus. It would be possible on the A3010 but it would also need to generated BD8-BD15 like the IDE upgrade does viewtopic.php?p=166064#p166064

Combine this with multiple podules viewtopic.php?p=395374#p395374 we should be able to make the A4000 the way Acorn should have made it.

I think the A4000 should have been somewhere between an A3020 and A5000, rather than an A3020 in a different box. It should have had 2 full size podule slots, half the number from the A5000.

Very cool. And yes, I totally agree that the A4000 was unnecessarily crippled by using the same mainboard as the A3020. There is loads of space in that case for useful goodies.

Bounce up and down and shout wibble if an A3000 podule box can be adapted to work on an A3010

Neat, such a simple solution as well.

Nice mod, IanS! (BaZ just sent me the link)

I've built a rackmount A4000, and this is giving me ideas for future upgrades - should I find a Podule NIC.

It seems like a really easy mod, but for a full-length (Eurocard) Podule, it'll probably need a fairly long PCB and some mechanical support?
Questions about software preservation (BBC, RISC OS or other platforms)? Please feel free to ask.
Currently looking for RISC OS software to archive and preserve, please drop me a PM if you have any to offer.
