Another hello from Sheffield!
Another hello from Sheffield!
Hi all!
I've been lurking for a bit and decided to sign up to this excellent information resource. I don't have much Acorn experience other than at school many years ago. Educational of course; not just using the computer lab to play Droom and Granny's Garden, or gawp at the Lander demo on the mysterious Archimedes machine hidden in the corner.
Over the last few years I've been going through my retro computer collection and repairing/upgrading as required, and my attention has turned to the A3010 I acquired from a mate, going on ten years ago. I recently discovered it has an internal battery (I've got a lot of Amiga experience so I was horrified) and recovered it from the attic, but upon opening the machine up it looked a lot worse than it actually was. Luckily it was tilted in such a way that most of the leakage had gone onto the shielding rather than the components. Properly cleaned, one trace repair under the battery and the machine is running nicely.
I've got a 4MB RAM upgrade on the way and will be looking for an IDE podule.
In the meantime I've set up Arculator on my PC so I can familiarise myself with RISC OS ready for the real thing. It's a bit of a learning curve for someone used to Windows and Amiga OS but I think I've grasped the basics, I managed to install SparkFS and ADDFS, set filetypes and run some games without too much trouble (and with a little help from the forum!)
Thank you for having useful stuff for a newbie to read

Thank you! Battery repair completed (but I'll probably redo it with a not-on-the-motherboard solution in the future) and 4MB RAM fitted, next stop IDE.
Re: Another hello from Sheffield!
Welcome and good news about the battery
Re: Another hello from Sheffield!
Thank you
I'd love to know why they thought that putting a time bomb on the motherboard was a good idea. I know they weren't expecting people to still be using the machines decades later, but still. So many dead Archies and Amigas

Welcome Jod!
Re: Another hello from Sheffield!
Cheers, Kev
I received a BBC B issue 7 today, haven't hooked it up yet. No FDC but all the ROM sockets appear to be populated so I wonder what I'll find in there. Exciting!
Got new PSU caps on order in case the Rifas go bang, which is apparently likely if they haven't already been replaced.
Looking forward to playing Droom on real hardware again.

Re: Another hello from Sheffield!
Seems to work fine, *HELP shows that it has AMX Mouse support V2.1 and View A1.4, I haven't opened it up yet.
Re: Another hello from Sheffield!
Got an SD drive delivered today so I've opened it up to fit the MMFS ROM. Had to do a bit of a repair to the user port as some pins were bent and one had been pushed inside, reset them and it's fine.
Apart from the OS and BASIC ROMs, there were three others which I've pulled for now as I don't need them. They're marked:
AMX
VIEW EIID
GRAT
The first two are clearly AMX Mouse support and View.
The one marked GRAT doesn't do anything obvious. It's a handwritten label. Does that name give any clues?

Re: Another hello from Sheffield!
I realised I could just put the unknown ROM into my T48 and read it.
I think it's 'R.GRAPHv2 - GRAPHICS EXTENSION 2.09 -- (C)1983 COMPUTER CONCEPTS-Paul Hiscock'
