Dodgy Cumana FDD

Post by bonzer »

I'm a newbie here, hoping someone can help with a FDD problem that I have after rescuing some Beeb Master stuff from the loft.

I have two Cumana drives but one of them wasn't working at all. After removing the loose metal head cover and cleaning the heads, the drive now reads nicely but quite often it seems to need a 'helping hand' to get the motor turning. When a disc is partially inserted, the motor runs every time but it seems that if there's any load (ie the disc and disc clamp), it won't start by itself. The component I assume is the motor driver (next to the flywheel with a heatsink) gets very hot when it's not turning. Possible capacitor replacement job?

The drive is an NEC FD1057.
