Have all the Beebug discs/tapes/issues been archived?

Post by VectorEyes »

Hello,

Do we know if all the Beebug issues have been archived and are available somewhere? I have a big box of Beebug magazine discs and tapes, and an almost complete set of the magazines. If there's somewhere I could donate them where they'd get archived I'd be happy to pass them on. But if they're all available already then I will do something else.

Thanks!

I believe the magazines have all been done. They are here.

The discs and tapes, on the other hand, have not. Many tapes are on Stairway to Hell:
  • Volume 1 is complete (I think, since only one tape was released for Volume 1, issue 10);
  • Volume 2 is complete;
  • Volume 3 is missing tapes 3-3, 3-4 and 3-5;
  • Volume 4 is complete;
  • Volume 5 is complete;
  • Volume 6 is missing tapes 6-5, 6-6, 6-7 and 6-10;
  • No tapes exist on STH for volume 7. However, I have six of them, which are 7-1, 7-4, 7-5, 7-7, 7-8 and 7-9. The others are missing;
  • For volume 8, only 8-2 exists on STH. I have 8-4, 8-5 and 8-6. The others are missing;
  • No tapes exist on STH for volume 9. I have only 9-2.
  • Volumes 10, 11 and 12 are all completely missing.
I don't know about the magazine discs. AFAIK, none of them have been archived at all, although I could be wrong.

If you have any of the missing tapes, I'd be very happy to do the work of digitising them.

Thanks very much Diminished,

I'll look through my collection and see whether I have any of the missing tapes you listed. If so I'll get in contact to sort out how to get them to you.

Now I need to find some people interested in archiving the discs. Time to contact the Acorn software preservation team!

I can't imagine they're protected in any way, so as long as they're free from errors, any available method should be suitable to get a standard SSD of them.
If nobody else is available, I'd be happy to give it a try.

Just while we're here, does anyone know if the later Elbug supplements have been scanned anywhere? I'm pretty sure I have more than the couple that are at 8bs

  • Volume 1 is complete (I think, since only one tape was released for Volume 1, issue 10);
  • Volume 2 is complete;
  • Volume 3 is missing tapes 3-3, 3-4 and 3-5;
  • Volume 4 is complete;
  • Volume 5 is complete;
  • Volume 6 is missing tapes 6-5, 6-6, 6-7 and 6-10;
  • No tapes exist on STH for volume 7. However, I have six of them, which are 7-1, 7-4, 7-5, 7-7, 7-8 and 7-9. The others are missing;
  • For volume 8, only 8-2 exists on STH. I have 8-4, 8-5 and 8-6. The others are missing;
  • No tapes exist on STH for volume 9. I have only 9-2.
  • Volumes 10, 11 and 12 are all completely missing.
It looks like I have Vol 3 no 7 (already digitised), Vol 6 full (so has four tapes you're missing), Vol 7 full (four tapes you're missing), Vol 8 full except number 7 (five tape you're missing) and Vol 9 nos 1-3 (two tapes you're missing).

I'll take it to DM to sort out how to get them to you. Do you know anyone who's going to ABUG? :)

First three tapes done. Twelve more to come.

9-1 was a little stubborn to decode (Quadbike needed a rather specific --scale-hf-pwr 0.75). There is an amateurish mastering error on this tape: It looks like it has been saved, rewound and then saved out again, as the final block of the final file repeats.

8-1 had a very sticky cassette mechanism, but decoded fine with Quadbike defaults once I'd actually managed to get the thing moving.

I have basically resigned myself at this point to having to invest in some web hosting for my Acorn archived content (specifically the audio recordings of tapes), as there isn't much space left on my Google Drive. I will make these tapes' audio recordings available somehow eventually.

I'm also now using my own tape digitising software (Quadbike), my own UEF converter (tibetuef.php), and my own tape playback routines in B-Em (tape overhaul v3 patch). The total number of Windows-only, closed-source pieces of software involved is zero. I like progress.

Last six.

I don't know whether it's because I used my Steinberg UR22 audio device, or because I changed the drive belt in my old Walkman, but these were easily the best-behaved set of tapes I've ever had to deal with. I didn't have to play any of them through more than once.
