A3000 and Pacmania

Post by bagpuss22 »

Hi all,

I have an A3000 which is working well. 4Mb and AKA12 MIDI card.

Recently I was given an original of Pacmania and so decided to try it BUT find,
once loaded the game starts and the Pacman constantly moves to the left and jumping.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I don't have an issues with keys or mouse so an at a loss as to why this might be happening.

Thanks

BP

Odd. Sounds like errant joystick input perhaps. Have you tried redefining keys?

I suspect its the Learning Curve version of Pac-mania you have, which has a bug in its RTFM Joystick code. ADFFS fixes it via:

Code: Select all

LOAD PACMANIA 396BC
| Correct RTFM Joystick code
MEMORYA 409B8 E92D43FE
MEMORYA 409BC 0A000005
MEMORYA 409C0 EF0EFFC2
MEMORYA 409C4 E3300000
MEMORYA 409C8 1A000002
MEMORYA 409CC EF0EFFC0
MEMORYA 409D0 E3300000
MEMORYA 409D4 18BD83FE
MEMORYA 409D8 E8BD01FE

GO 396BC
If you've copied the game to HD and have !ADFFS running, you can replace the contents of Pac-mania's !Run with "ADFBootFloppy F1044701" to use the ADFFS script.

I have once, back in 1998 (as the Archimedes version of this game was standard issue to British primary schools during the early 1990s on account of the A3010's Learning Curve Pack, and as the original arcade versions were not emulated in MAME until 1999, or 2014 in the case of the initial "International" revision dated to 11/11/1987, it was the closest thing to them that many British children had at the time), and it made me think the game was broken.

That aside, the Archimedes version is somewhat more unforgiving than the original arcade versions, as not only are all the ghosts clones of either Blinky (with Clyde's eyes), Sue, or Funky (with Inky's eyes), but when you try to jump over them, they will often reverse direction so you have no choice but to get killed by landing on them. Furthermore, the Funky clones do not stop jumping in Rounds 8 to 13 (the second Block Town and Pac-Man's Park worlds), and if Pac-Man eats a power pellet at the same time a ghost touches him, the edible ghost will kill him (in the arcade versions, Pac-Man eats the ghost). Finally, although the continue feature cannot be turned off in the Archimedes version, its usage is limited to three times (like in all other conversions of the game produced by Grandslam Entertainments), so if you do manage to solve your issue, I just hope you know what you will be letting yourself in for.
