Ah great, I thought. I'm good at this one.
Or so I thought!
Used to be able to go around all the 9 or 10 screens easily. Not anymore...
This was my third go at it.

Best score so far. A great game, one of the Beeb classics without doubt.

I first remember seeing it at a friends house , along with Repton and a few other games , it made my mind up I had to ditch the Electron and get a BBC B.

Here's an effort from me. The game's good, but there are some flaws. The fire button doesn't always work (I mean when Mr. Ee actually has the crystal ball to hand, not when he's thrown it and is waiting for it back). Also, the bit in the instructions about the diggers is a total lie, the baddies change into diggers whenever they feel like it, not occasionally when they're blocked; it's usually when you're at your most vulnerable too.

I totally agree with your assessment. If you're not on your game those baddies will get you because as you say they turn whenever they want, not just when they are blocked. It's annoying, especially when you're having a good game and get caught out by something like that. I also have had the ball just held, no matter how often I've tried to fire it. Very strange bug for this type of game. One other possible design flaw is your guy moves in a grid fashion but the apples can be out of alignment with the grid. So can the baddies when you go into fast play mode. If you try to go down a corridor with one of them in it then you lose a life because they are slightly off the grid that you have to stay on.

Nice to see 3 of the baddies turn into diggers at the same time (even though none of them were blocked...). Anyway, here's an increase to my score, and a few levels further into the game.

I chose it, I'd better play it! Another of my favourites from BITD - brilliant conversion of the arcade Mr.Do! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_BBQWed8Vk I've been playing the Beeb version for a few hours today due to the other half working in the garden  thought I'd squeeze in some Beeb repairs too (I've got quite a few dead ones - two fixed today, yay!)

Yeah, the diggers can really screw you over at random
The letter dudes appearing can be a bit of a bugbear too, but I guess you accept the risks if you traverse that top screen row!

Fire button can be a bit unresponsive but I don't it to be much of an issue. You can pull off some very effective 180 turns and still be confident that your ball will take a pursuer down. Just be sure to hold in - rather than tap - the throw key?

I think the biggest problem I have with the gameplay is what Ed mentioned - the "rounded cornering" to the player's movement, which can see your guy pulled back the way he came - often fatally! The more simplistic movement is the only way that Superior's Mr. Wiz actually is "superior"!

Yeah but that game's just awful. One of the worst games to come from Superior imo.

No, we've had worse from Superior I think Fwibbler, but don't remember which ones......this one's just a bit different. Personally I love the game but it does have it's flaws, much the same as any 8-bit game of the day that you would play.

Edit: I would say some would think that Ghouls, BattleTank, Wallaby, Hunchback and maybe even Stryker's Run fall into a lesser category than Mr. Ee!.

Personally I would say Wallaby is the very worst, far worse than Mr. Ee! The other 4 games are probably just preferences of people but I'm going by the comments I've seen on those games, 'bug reports' as it were. Anyway, interesting topic.

Jack & The Beanstalk was a stand-out bad game, I just happened across it a while back - it's bad - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eq3EIb8X3ko although Wallaby is especially bad, after 10 mins of playing it I managed to get into the high score table - then it crashed once I put my name in... #-o

New high score .

I remember Mr Wiz too, didn't think it was too bad, but then I saw Mr Ee, and that was it, no contest so much better, interesting there was a version on the Archimedes called Mr Doo - which wasn't much better , so I think Mr Ee was the best version of Mr Do on the Acorn machines.

A few hours on this, going from the sublime to the ridiculous (not necessarily in that order). Sometimes the game just conspires to kill you from the off with the random digger-spawning. Despite that, it's quite addictive. I have been swearing at the PC a lot though
