How Long for Visit to Centre for Computing History

Post by james »

Howdy

I might soon have an opportunity to visit The Centre for Computing History en route elsewhere (before their September closure)

Realising this is somewhat down to personal tastes and interests but for those who’ve been, how long might be a reasonable visiting time?

I'd give it at least three or four hours. If you like to talk to curators or get involved in using machines, it could be a full day. (Obviously, this is my personal take!)

I've visited 2 or 3 times, and I'd agree, about 3-4 hours for a good root around.

My (only and) last visit to the CfCH lasted about three days. It was an ABUG meeting back in 2019

If you want to read every piece of information and play around with the computers there, I'd say a minimum of four hours at least.

My last visit I spent a good 4 hours there. Still looking forward to going back the next time I’m back in the UK. Well worth allowing a half day.

Is the September closure just a seasonal thing?

Their website says:

** The Museum is closed for building work from Monday 4th September to Friday 29th September 2023**

We re-open Saturday 30th September

So looks like just a one-off.

If there's a particular machine you're wanting to see, be sure and contact them first. I'd been hoping a Falcon 030 would just be 'out there' but sadly it wasn't on display (which probably makes sense). The staff member was very nice though and said they'd usually try and accomodate if you contact them in advance.
