It's really nice to have another browse of The Night Owl today. I'm pleased to see that content is being evolved, the art section is really good viewing.

Favourites to far have to be Tom Baker and Bruce Lee images :) Looking forward to the interviews over time, it would be great to hear more about how you do the artwork too. Seeing things like Fight Club & Reservoir Dogs in teletext art is really fun.

Keep up the great work Brian!

Martin

p.s. Special mention to the Sid James picture, I read 'Yak Yak Yak' in his laughing voice! :D

I couldn't get the previous version to work, could have been a local / user issue but it would complain it couldn't connect to the host and I didn't troubleshoot it much before realising there was a new version that "just worked"
Thanks, that's really helpful. I'm on Linux but I can probably install BeebEm under wine or fire up my Windows 10 VM to do this.

Hi Brian,

I've dragged the Tandata terminal out so I can try accessing via a proper modem next time it's online. I should be around tonight from about 2300 but I know thats a little late so failing that, next week sometime.

Cheers

Night Owl is open today (Sunday) by TCP/IP from 1pm.

Interest is very sparse so once a week likely from now on
unless people request a private session which is welcome.

Will likely continue this way until messaging is fixed
then things will be officially live and advertised on the BBS guides to a set schedule.

thanks

Thanks! I had a quick go at building that but it superficially seems to only want to build the server stuff - the telstar-client is commented out in the makefile and appears to depend on something called fyne-cross which relates to docker packages and cross-compilation and I decided I didn't mind running the binary *that* much. :-)
If you would be happier with a client compiled from source, you can compile Matrix Brandy (only dependency is SDL 1.2), and the Telstar client (in examples/Mode7/telstar) is a plain-text BASIC program.
Matrix Brandy BASIC VI (work in progress) The Distillery (another work in progress) Note Quiz (New educational software for the BBC and modern kit)

Thanks Soruk, I will definitely bear that in mind. I'm not fanatical about "no binaries" but it's nice to avoid them from random sources where I can. Sophira helped me fix my problem building vidtex from source, so I'm sorted for now, but it might be cool to give Matrix Brandy a try anyway at some point.

Re: the Night Owl BBS featuring (Wifi Sheep)

Post by brianmartin_2001 »

The (WIFI sheep) youtube channel presented by Tom Williamson,
is doing a livestream and maybe a follow up video about Night Owl BBS.
The livestream starts tomorrow (Sat 21st Oct)@ 8pm and is titled
"Eight till Late" on his channel.

Hopefully some of you may tune in and login on the night , there will be a live chat
during the stream.

Avoiding any mishaps this should be quite fun .

Hope a few of the recent Night Owl visitors might attend.

Night Owl BBS is up from now if anyone is interested.
I appreciate the random nature of the host being open is
quite frustrating, but running on a 45 year old Master 128
I can't be running 24 hrs /day.

There hasn't been much interest of late so I have been less
inclined to open the host anymore than once per week.
I will be doing appointments on request though
and if the messaging feature is ever fixed the Board will become
open on a daily set schedule.

thanks

Hi Brian
I’m enjoying Night Owl right now from Windsor on a Master 128 using Commstar and a Wimodem.
All looks excellent. Set at 2400 baud at my end.
Many thanks. I appreciate you taking the time to create this.

Hello Steve,

yes I saw you were on last night and stayed a good while. Thanks for visiting.
I unfortunately was on my way out last night in a ridiculous rush (long story)
and was literally changing my clothes while you were on the Host. I didn't have
time to break in for a chat which I would have done for a new visitor.
If you'd like to visit again just let me know the time you want to schedule it
and I'll set it up ..

thanks for calling and glad you enjoyed it.

I'm trying to connect via TCP, but it doesn't appear to be working... is something wrong with the connection?

Hi Brian
Thanks for the chat on Night Owl today.
Enjoyed the Ken Lowe interview and the artwork, especially the composer biogs.
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen this album cover somewhere before.

Best of luck getting the messaging sorted.

Yes Steve ,

was good having you on board today. Enjoyed the craic.
And yes I will be including a few more of iconic album covers
in the ART section. Some are just too tricky to replicate but I'll
keep thinking of ideas for a few more. Dark Side of the Moon I thought
would be simple enough to do. I dunno if Viewdata really does it justice though.
Thanks for your time today.

Re: the Night Owl BBS (now with a web link)

Post by brianmartin_2001 »

Well folks , you don't have much to do now to access Night Owl.
A kind gent ( Lord H ) at CCL4 has kindly set up a JS link so anyone can
log on to Night Owl through their web browser. Ok not quite as
magical as accessing on a real Beeb but a good ink nonetheless.
You can all finally get around to having a look. This might mean
I put the Host up much more often in the evenings.

Please let me know if this is of value and I'll feedback the responses to
CCL4.

thanks

That's a nice gizmo - thanks! Enjoyed the interview with Ken. (On a mac, used shift-3 for the hash, which I might have guessed, but officially that's a £)

Ed , thanks for sussing out how to navigate with a MAC.
I can maybe add that to the HELP section on the board.

Glad you liked the JS link , Lance (Fourthstone) called in from Oz using
it too so it has upped the numbers already.

I'm not pleased with the tab title on the link though , (nothing to do with me).
CCL4 have a pretty ribald sense of humour but I'd rather they didn't contaminate
Night Owl with it. It's not the same thing as CCL4 on that score.
It is a good link though so I hope no-one is offended by it.
