Ooh, I haven't played this on the Beeb. From the screenshot it looks like a clone of Time Pilot though. Hope it plays as well, because Time Pilot is a great game.

Had a few goes, not usually skilled at shooters but luck seemed to help a bit with this attempt, think I made it to 1984.

This must be written by the same person who wrote Deathstar surely?
The game mechanics are very similar and the sound effects too!
First time I've played this one...

Got through all five levels and back to the biplanes with two lives left but must have been a bit careless because that's where it ended.

I quite like this game but there are a few fundamental issues that are spoiling it for me :

1. The collision detection is very iffy
2. Random deaths when there are no bullets on screen
3. A minor scoring issue whereby the "boss" only gives 1000 points instead of 2000 points

These exact same issues occurred in Peter Johnson's other shoot-em-up, Deathstar (there were scoring issues in that game but I can't remember if that was to do with the boss too).

I'll post a score when I get something half-decent.

I managed to complete the 5 stages and looped around again to the 2nd stage. The worrying thing though is that 4 of the deaths were down to bad collision detection and one down to an invisible bullet  . Not good :( .

I think the boss score thing is because the boss takes 10 hits and each time you hit it the score goes up by 100. The remaining 1000 points is added after the "killer blow".

Fantastic, absolutely love this game and it's one I used to play on the school computer back in the day. Did a vid of this one on my youtube channel a while back.

Great to have an extra reason to play it, not that I'm that good at it but such a fun one to play🥰 will try and take part in all of these from now on.

Anyway here's my first go, and first time I've reached the space stage since school🙂 never noticed how much the spaceships look like cherry bakewells before, haha.

This just to test is thumbnail is better size for here?

or full size?

To clarify, when I started playing this when I was little, I just held down RETURN for fire - it lets off 6 rounds a time, and that's how I've always played it, assuming that's the normal way. Referencing the rules thread, does that count as "playing the game as intended" or are we expected to not use that auto-firing mechanism. I tried it (though via B-Em 2.2) firing as and when but the game didn't always respond to the request to fire when I pressed RETURN.

I did have a read of it last night but I was still confused.

In my experience the extra lives stopped after like 40,000 or something like that.

If the author has included the function to auto-fire by holding down the return key, then he must've intended it to be used. To be fair, we'd all have repetitive strain injury if we were expected to bash the return key solidly for the duration of play. We aren't THAT anal about the "playing the game as intended" bit  . I think it covers more the "points-whoring" aspects of play and downright cheating.

They don't stop after 40K, from experience. From reading the posts from the last time this game was played, there isn't an extra life at 100K but there is one at 110K.

Got to the fourth level this time.
Its just as well the game gives you a few extra lives to make up for those it unfairly takes from you...

Oooooooooooooooh! one of my fav shooters - just had a go for a couple of hours, damn I'm old & rusty  - as I suggested it, I'd better get on and as Grandma Nike says "Just Do It!" Oddly, the name in the high score table is truncated to 9 characters - the first time I played it, I couldn't get any name in the high score table - another bug, just like the dodgy collision detection around bullets that have a contact radius the size of a MODE2 character #-o My system is to spin around for a bit, then fly upwards at a 30 degree angle, take your time, get the mini-bombers on L2 and so long as you're flying upwards, you'll get a steady stream of parachutists - the real score pusher in this game. It is very similar to Deathstar, along with the impossible level progression where the enemy just hits you immediately and your lives plunge to zero in a single level  (oh, take it for granted the RETURN key is a finger rest for this game...)
