I'll have to set aside a bit of time to play this properly. I know when I get acquainted with the game again that it'll be a few hours on one play for me. Not sure whether I can reach the dizzy heights of level 192 again though!

Here's a first crack from me. It turns out that I'm really rusty

Oh well, plenty of time to relearn some of the levels.

First (and maybe only) try from me. I remember back in the day getting to maybe level 33 or 41 (not sure which - my hazy memory says there were more emus and two ducks). This was maybe level 20-22?
I was playing in an online emulator and I felt like I missed a few jumps and ladder grabs because of it...
The duck release was a design masterstroke and really changes the feel of the game entirely. So good.

You never get 2 ducks. When you get to level 33, you get 1 duck and the maximum amount of ostriches (or emus, or chickens or whatever they're supposed to be) at full speed. After level 40, the levels repeat at the same speed with the maximum number of ostriches and just 1 duck. The timer at the start of the level also goes down after every 2 sets of levels. It starts off at 900 at level 1, goes down to 800 at the start of level 17, 700 at level 33, 600 at level 49. 500 at level 65, 400 at level 81, 300 at level 97, 200 at level 113 and then finally 100 at level 129. It then stays at 100 after that.

Update: I now know that the timer resets back to 900 at level 257 (which shows as level 1)!

Still can't find my previous form but not bad, getting to level 40 and nearly getting past it. I'm still very sloppy though and had a lot of avoidable deaths. Still, over half a million points is pretty acceptable for a 2nd go. Once I manage to remember how to clear levels 32 and 40 efficiently, then the big scores will start coming.

I was just looking back at your high score the last time stardot did Chuckie Egg. No chance I'm getting near that... even if it does basically repeat itself from here on =D>

It's the time limit that gets you in the end. I have heard, anecdotally, that the game resets to level 1 after 255 levels. That'd probably take around 6 hours for one game though (and then add to that how far you'd get after the wrap around). Some guy was claiming to have done it twice, with a score of over 13 million, on a comment on a YouTube video.

I'm also making a little progress. If I wouldn't panic move, I'd probably do a lot better, so many needlessly wasted lives.

That's the nature of the game, trying to keep the pace going without the panic impulsive mistakes.

First scores so far. Can definitely get further. Need to stop losing so many lives needlessly.

Good to see one of my picks finally came out of the hat !

Post by Venger »

Umm... I hate to say this... but I rolled the game over in levels, playing for over 5 and a half hours.

My score when I quit, voluntarily, was 5177880 I still had plenty of lives left too but even I have to call it quits sometimes. Luckily I have it all on video (in 3 parts as my video can only record 2 hour sections). As we know from last time, the score rolls over after 1 million. so you'll have to take my word for it that I had 5177810. If I'd pressed Escape + H, the score doesn't get recorded, so you wouldn't have seen a high score. The only thing I could've done is to purposefully die, but I probably would've had at least 40 lives left to commit suicide with.

I'll post the photos of the level changing from level 255 to level 00 so I can prove my claim. I may also upload the 3 videos to YouTube as I'm not sure the level rollover has ever been recorded (not on the BBC Micro anyway).

Update: I've taken the save state and killed myself 57 times to get a screenshot of the score, in a later post. I'll upload the videos to YouTube, but probably when the round's over so as not to give any pointers away on getting past the harder levels like 32, 40 and then multiples of 8 going on from that.

Ace work =D> if somewhat masochistic! After getting into the repeating levels last night I was sure it would be possible to basically keep going... but saying that it's still quite a feat and commitment to sit there for 6 hours!

Yeah, once you get the pattern down it's basically making sure that you accumulate more lives than you lose. It's not that easy when the timer's down to 100 though, especially on the levels that are multiples of 8.

Talking of masochistic, I did a save state when I did actually quit. A part of me wants to see what score I would've got if I did carry on. Saying that though, if I started off at level 1 with far fewer lives than when I was on level 257, theoretically I could've gone on ad infinitum.

That gives me an idea though. If I open the save state, I can purposefully kill myself so that I can get a proper screenshot of my score at the point where I did quit. I'll also know how many lives I had left when I did quit.

Ok, so I decided to save my game when I quit. I just killed off all my remaining lives and found out that I had 57 lives left at that point! So it's pretty safe to say that I'd probably be able to keep on going for as long as I wanted!

After doing myself in 57 times, I managed to enter my name and get a screenshot of it to prove my 5 million+ score.

I strongly suggest that Chuckie Egg doesn't get picked again (at least not the original version; I know there are variants with harder level designs out there) as it can take forever on just one go.

I had a look through the high scores forum for Chuckie Egg and found a 3M+ score from you in the past. I haven't played Chuckie for a long time, my preference being shooters, but after a few 80ks I was getting 200ks+ and then this one, once my brain was rearranged for Chuckie  491,550 a friend at school could play this all day, I know he did the Level 0 and had a 7M+ score  I guess once you're used to the duck and have the jump locations sorted as muscle memory, then it's just a matter of gaining more lives than losing them. Still, it's a classic platformer for many computers of the 80s and gives people a chance (reason) to give it a whirl :D
