To forum admin: error in post notification

Post by CHRISJJ »

Post notification emails (e.g. below) say.
You are receiving this notification because "paulb" quoted you in the topic
"Acorn Electron MOS credits string?" at "stardot.org.uk". You can use the
following link to view the reply made.

If you want to view the quoted post, click the following link:
viewtopic.php?p=373302#p373302
Given the link does go to the quoting post (as the first para suggests), "view the quoted post" is incorrect and should read e.g. "view the quoting post".

Since this is core phpbb functionality and the admins have (correctly, IMHO) shown reluctance to change the forum software (it makes patching harder) you might want to take this upstream to the phpbb software authors. It might make it into a patch release.

Meaning messages to users are hardwired??

Thanks for the suggestion, but my past experience of this cruddy software suggests that would be a waste of my time and theirs.

It is indeed hardwired somewhere, I just had a quick scout through the control panels and it's not something that's directly configurable. It doesn't really affect functionality although I appreciate it might be a little jarring. Given this thing is like a house of cards at the best of times it's best to let sleeping dogs lie in this instance.

It's in the language translation files. If you look at the phpbb software you'll find this:

Code: Select all

% cat language/en/email/quote.txt
Subject: Quoted in "{TOPIC_TITLE}"

Hello {USERNAME},

"{AUTHOR_NAME}" quoted you in the topic "{TOPIC_TITLE}" at "{SITENAME}".

If you want to view the quoted post, click the following link:
{U_VIEW_POST}

If you want to view the topic, click the following link:
{U_TOPIC}

If you want to view the forum, click the following link:
{U_FORUM}

If you no longer wish to receive updates about replies quoting you, please update your notification settings here:
{U_NOTIFICATION_SETTINGS}

{EMAIL_SIG}
So it would be possible to change the language file... but it would be over-ridden on the next patch upgrade.
