Inufuto BBC games compilation

Post by Cybershark »

oss003 made a thread about it over in new projects in development but - as not everyone looks in there - I figured I'd cross-post about this little treasure trove in here too.

He linked to the site of a Japanese programmer who had created a bunch of games in some C-like language. This guy had then compiled the games into playable versions for dozens of different computer systems.

Of the eleven games on his site, ten are available for the BBC and Electron. They can be a bit simplistic but are also really interesting to play, as most of them are quite different to any of the games that were native to our machines.

They were only available there as standalone UEF files - and it was a bit of a faff to grab all of the games - so I took the liberty of compiling the individual tape images into one single disc file, added a (very no-frills) menu system & have now tacked on some basic instructions (translated from the site). It's pretty easy to intuit what to do in the games, anyway :)

Electron versions of the games can be found on the site. See the original thread for more details.

There are some really interesting game mechanics here. I particularly like the duel type games Battlot and Bootskell where the enemy is trying to achieve the same thing as you. Cacorm must have taken a lot of thought to implement and the 8-way scrolling in Ruptus is very impressive.

Scrolling is a bit slow and clunky on games like Aerial, but that one's still a fun side-scrolling shooter of the kind that the Beeb has so few of. And Ruptus may be as close to Bosconian as we ever see on the Acorn machines :-D
Makes you wonder how much better someone who's au-fait with the Beeb could make such games, optimised for our machines...

Battlot is wonderful, although it's a shame the game area is not bigger, and that it takes so long for the difficulty to ramp up. Bootskell I originally wrote of as being another Pengo clone, until I realised that the enemies can also kick the bricks! 8-[

I found Neuras to be quite refreshing too, with its unique combination of arcade action and memory game.

The design of these games is really excellent, thanks (to both Kees and yourself) for putting the link on the forum.

It must have been such a lot of work for the author to get them working on so many diverse systems.

Quite. Last night I gave Ascend a bit more of a playthrough than I previously had, and found it to be more complex than I'd realised.
Features such as player power-ups travelling around inside a platform game were not something I'd ever come across in a Beeb game before.

That's quite mind-boggling really! =D>

I notice that Inufuto has released another game for the Acorn machines - a Galaga clone called Guntus.

Electron UEF here: http://inufuto.web.fc2.com/8bit/electron/guntus.uef
BBC UEF here: http://inufuto.web.fc2.com/8bit/beeb/guntus.uef

WAV files and source code available on their site.

An amazing project. Impressive how Inufuto keeps porting these games to so many systems, including the good old Beeb. But am I right in thinking that the actual Cate source code for the games hasn't been released? (I know that some C code and some assembler has been released.) Has the Cate compiler itself been released?

That link is broken in your post.

:!:

I've updated bbcmicro.co.uk:

Compilation: http://bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=4194

Mick will eventually release his own repackaging of Guntus which will be consistent with the appearance of the other per-game Inufuto .SSDs on bbcmicro.co.uk, and it will overwrite my temporary hack:

Guntus: http://bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=4262

It's a bit of a gold mine for us, isn't it? Although it has to be said that the shooters definitely look a lot less clunky on some of the other platforms they've been ported to. Inufuto perhaps just couldn't get any sort of worthwhile result for Impetus, that one game which hasn't made it over to the Acornsphere.
I don't believe the Cate compiler or source code for the games has been publicly released - but then I don't know if anyone's tried simply asking them for either?

Thanks for pointing the odd URL out. Have fixed it now.

Brilliant! Thanks for doing what I'd thus far been too lazy to do, and adding the new arrival to my compilation SSD =D>

Just noticed Inufuto have been gradually adding ports to a new game CRACKY over the past few days. No Acorn versions yet but worth keeping an eye on at http://inufuto.web.fc2.com/8bit/cracky/

BBC and Electron versions of CRACKY have appeared at the link above. Looks like another fun little game in a very similar vein to their other platformers.

The Cate compiler and the assembler were released by Inufuto:

https://github.com/inufuto/Cate
https://github.com/inufuto/asm8

and the source codes can be downloaded from the Inufuto's game page.
