RISC OS Select 3i4 disc build

Post by lucss21a »

Does a disc build of RISC OS Select 3i4 exists? I couldn't find it on Google, and is it different to Adjust? If it exists, i appreciate a link of it via private messages, and I have a question if 3QD Development had the Adjust or Select version. Thanks in advance.

Adjust is, iirc just 4.39 on ROM, and select 3i4 is a softload version of the same (which is designed to load over 4.0x on ROM).

3QD own the rights to distribute the 4.x releases. If you bought it from 3QD's website you'd end up with the softload 4.39 (eg, this version: http://www.riscos.com/shop/products/104/index.htm).

Oh, ok. I am also curious if there's disc builds for other versions of Select still available aside from 4.39 and 6.20. I'm pretty sure the 6.20 on sale at 3QD Developments is the softload one, and not a full disc build.

Still don't completely understand to be honest. The versions you'll download from 3QD will be either an ISO or a zip I suspect, with the relevant files on it to install directly onto a machine or emulated machine? If you need the 4.39 boot sequence, then that's here: http://riscos.com/ftp_space/439/index.htm

Needed - past tense? If you improve your Google-fu, you will find ISO images of all Select releases 8)

As it turns out, I need isos for Select 4iN (4i2 and 4i4), as well as 3.00 floppy images

Can i ask a question: is the 3.1 apps compatible with 3.00?

If you have Select, then by definition you have the ISO.

You'd be crazy to run 3.00. It's so competely broken.
I suspect the standard Acorn "Apps" would be generally compatible, yes.

Acorn just pushed it out too quickly - 3.00 was only ever on early model A5000s. There are lots of bugs including ones that cause freezing but the worst corrupts discs (IDE and floppy). It was a bit of an embarassment and RISC OS 3.10 was released really fairly quickly after -- A5000 owners received these for 'almost free' because it was so vital.

Changing topics, as it turns out, I couldn't find the Select 4i2 and 4i4 disc images, I tried multiple search engines, internet archive, a mirror of the risc os select site and nothing. I'm also looking older builds of RISC OS Open, specifically versions before 5.28.

Did you try this one? Seems pretty complete for the ROMs and softload elements. No installers or !Boot structures for each specific 3.5+ version though.

I run a little online shop called "Vintage Imitation Parts" to sell a few Acorn Archimedes and BBC Micro related bits and pieces, such as my imitation keyboard surrounds and just recently my imitation function strips.

Are you after a representative sample of each version, or do you want absolutely every build? Because "every build" could be a large number.

Bear in mind that ROOL do "nightly builds" of the odd-numbered (i.e. development) versions. In practice this only means about 2-3 builds per week, but a typical development version will be active for 2 years so you're looking at 100-150 builds per development version. Since you want HardDisc4 as well, the number doubles (i.e. to 200-300 ZIP files per version).

Let's take RISC OS 5.27 as an example. I only downloaded 31 IOMD ROM images, but I was just dipping in from time to time rather than grabbing every build. For HardDisc4 I did try to get every build (I didn't quite manage that, but even so I downloaded over 170 ZIP files). I would estimate that a full collection for 5.27 would be something like 350 ZIP files (175 ROM, 175 HD4).

I won't bore you with the details, but a rough estimate for "every build from 5.19 to 5.27 inclusive" would be somewhere north of 1000 ZIP files and could exceed 2000 ZIP files.

I want the recent nightly builds, not neccessary all

Edit: to clarify, i also need a modified 5.17 rom that works on RPCemu, and what i meant of recent is like the very last nightly build of an odd numbered version

Edit 2: I also need the first 5.15 build

Do you mean that they still sell older versions of Select (4iN and 5iN)? I assumed they only sell 6.20 (Select 6i1), which is the last one that RISCOS Ltd made, and it would make sense to give the latest version to consumers.

I bought a copy of 4.39 for RISC PC from 3QD not so long ago. Wouldn't have 6.x if you paid me ;-)

If you mean can you buy beta software like RISC OS 4.36, the answer should be no.

You most likely will need to talk directly to the maintainers of the build server, and perhaps offer to pay for their time to retrieve these files for you. As mentioned above, you’re asking for a lot of data, which also simply might not exist.

May I ask the reasons for your desire to collect every version of RISC OS? I think wanting even a representative sample each nightly beta build goes quite a long way beyond idle curiosity. Perhaps if we understand your motives we might be able to help more.

I like archiving stuff for myself, I'm pretty interested in RISC OS and various other operating systems. I was archiving it personally, and I think it's good to have it on my hard drive.

Edit: I'm also working in a GUI section in my site, so having some samples to review later on is nice.

While trying to look for the Select 4i2 and 4i4 (which looks impossible, if I unless contact Aaron or the Acorn Antique guys via email), I tried to compile the 3.71 source and it compiles, with minor caveats.

My motive is that to review all versions of RISC OS, as well as trying them out, and archiving them. I want to have a copy of Select 4i2 and 4i4 as well as representative builds of RISC OS Open. For Select ones, I would probably ask someone about it. For the Open versions, I would appreciate it. That's all for now.
