Atom Case
Atom Case
It's not perfect yet, but thanks to Kees van Oss his CAD files I managed to print a case with my 3D printer for my Acorn Atom.
It's printed in 4 pieces because I have a small 3D printer not cabable of print it in one piece. Clued it and strengthen it with long nails which are melted in the case.

Re: Atom Case
Wow .... nice job ...
Did you have to change anything for fitting the hardware?

Re: Atom Case
Only minor things, one PCB screw holder is out of place and I had to file down on the right site of the keyboard. The break, return and spacebar they would be other wise stuck. If I had adjust the richt part of the case with the 3D software so it was 2 mm bigger to the right then it should fit perfectly.
Your drawings were almost perfect. But I am happy with the end result. I bought this atom whitout a case so I am very happy with the and result.
Re: Atom Case
Wow! Amazing result!
This will allow an ATOM case in any color and with the choice of PLA, ABS or PETG.
How well does splitting the case in multiple prints work with alignment?

Re: Atom Case
You can see that there is a split in the middle but that's the result of printing the case with 2 different PLA ( had not enough from the same PLA due trail and error ) and resolution. The right one is printed with a hire resolution. It is after all a prototype. But I am ver happy with the result. For splitting the case I used the standard program 3D build in windows 10. It has a very easy tool to split a slt drawing. And the alignment is perfect. For the rest I used FreeCad.

Re: Atom Case
You have done a really great job there! It's very impressive.
Do you plan to leave it black (as some Atom cases were) or spray it cream?

Re: Atom Case
FreeCAD I use for both 3D print designs and CNC designs so I am quite interested in the design files.dreamerxb wrote: ↑Sun Oct 17, 2021 10:35 amYou can see that there is a split in the middle but that's the result of printing the case with 2 different PLA ( had not enough from the same PLA due trail and error ) and resolution. My 3D printer is definitely too small to print a whole case
Re: Atom Case
I found my original AutoCAD files ...... indeed , the keyboard cutout isn't right.
Will check that and the location of the PCB pillars in my real Atom.
I also added the Acorn Atom logo ....

Re: Atom Case
I changed the opening dimensions for the keyboard with 2 mm.
dreamerxb, can you dimension the pillar problem?
This is the inner view of the top.

Re: Atom Case
From the inner view, it is the upper right pillar ( the small one ). It has to move 10mm to the left ( center from the pillar )

Re: Atom Case
Hi,
just a thought that popped up...
Because we still run into people which have to cut (or have) an Atom in half from time to time:
viewtopic.php?p=339134#p339134
& like Kees said: viewtopic.php?p=339190#p339190
Would'nt it be handy for some people with a half Atom (or Beeb) to have a nice 3D printed housing,
so then backside would be nice (3D printed) too, instead of improvised pieces of wood &/or plasctic mounted to it?...
Greetings, Wim...

Re: Atom Case
Hiya Kees - is there any chance I can get the original file rather than the STL output file so I can split it?
I can’t split STL’s except within the slicer and can’t guarantee an exact split doing it that way. The key to this is getting a STEP file that I can manipulate in my 3d CAD application.
Cheers.

Re: Atom Case
Hi Ade,
the drawing is made in AutoCAD and is a DWG file.
I can't export it as a STEP file, only DWF, DWFx, SAT, IGES, IGS.
Are there other formats you can import?
If you want, I can split the top- and bottom case each in 4 parts with some overlap for glueing together.
** Update .. Just found a way to export STEP files , AutoCAD Mechanical can export STEP files ...
Greetings

Thanks so much - I’ll do some experimenting and let you know.oss003 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 7:51 am Hi Ade,

Re: Atom Case
Adding tabs to a sliced model - I’ll upload a version of the sliced file (4 sections) when we’ve done a trial run. Printing now - 14 hours per corner on a highly modified Ender.thecellartroll wrote: ↑Fri Jan 21, 2022 2:13 pmIt would be fantastic to have the files for the case like that!

Awesome! That's dedication to the Acorn cause! Fingers crossed for a spaghetti free few days
Re: Atom Case
The designs look great. I’m looking forward to see some pictures of the final printed case
