Does anyone play Cribbage? HELP required..

Post by leenew »

Hi,
I have typed in CRIBBAGE from the July/August/September 1985 issues of Computing Today.
It is the most bug-ridden pile of code I have ever seen printed in a magazine.
After fixing all of my typos, I must have fixed well over 50 mistakes from the printed BBC listing.
Cribbage was adapted from a 1980 program for the Exidy Sorcerer and, helpfully, there was a version for the Amstrad CPC printed along side the BBC version.
The Amstrad version seems much better, so after many hours tearing my hair out, cross-referencing, I think I have a working game of Cribbage.
Now, the problem is I can't really play the game so I am unsure if it is working/scoring correctly.
Would anyone who plays cribbage have a play and report any problems please?
The only thing I think I am noticing is that the point for "GO" seems to be awarded inconsistently...
Is there a problem with "GO"?

Any help gratefully received.

Lee.

Nice work!

Why not upload the .SSD to bbcmicro.co.uk (and label it as a work in progress) so that it’s accessible to more people?

Seems to play well if a little slowly. Didn't see a problem with GO - points seemed to be awarded as I'd expect.

There does seem to be a display bug on the "pairs" total there is an "&c" which looks out of place. Highlighted in yellow here:

I don’t know cribbage, but “&c” is short for “etc.” (“etcetera”). Does that make sense in context?

I haven't heard of that abbreviation of the abbreviation etcetera before..
With "GO" the computer seems to award itself a point immediately if I can't go, but sometimes I feel I should get a point, but don't?

I was taught cribbage when I was four and have never heard of go!

I do know cribbage - was brought up on card games. If nobody makes 31 then the last to play gets 1 point. You're supposed to say "go" I believe?

Okay, so I'm playing now. The first thing I'd say is that instead of working out your scores for you, it should first ask how many points you think you've scored otherwise there can be no "muggins". That aside, in one game it scored exactly as I'd have expected. Hardly a thorough testing, but seemed okay to me.

You say "go" when it's nominally your turn but you can't play a card ('cos it would go over 31). This lets the next player take their turn.

When no one can go then the last person to play a card gets the "go" point. This should stack, so you might play a card to get a run of three _and_ the go point (especially if you know the other player can't go; eg you know they've got cards 10 or higher), so you'd say "three for the run and go is four?".

Seems to play and score fine to me.
It plays about the same speed as the version that I wrote in C for a Pentium II 300!
I would prefer it if it automated the "go" bit, but it would probably be ok if I wasn't playing on a phone!

Hmmm... it seems it may be OK then?
Thank goodness, because my eyes can't take another comparison-trawl of these listings

I found an ad for the original game:

I had a little play, using the browser link. (I forgot that my PC has SHIFT-BREAK as the shortcut to restart my computer - oops!)

I didn't know what I was doing, but it seemed to work OK. (Also I didn't have any graphics glitches this time). It's been about 15 years or even longer since I played crib, although I have been promised (or threatened) a game when on holiday at the end of the month! All I remember is that it's impossible to score 19, and in our family when you lose your turn because you can't play, we call it "knocking".

Using the cursor keys to highlight and select the card you want to play, instead of typing it in, would have been a good improvement I think.

Don't think so, although there have been a few Firefox updates lately.

I've played Crib on and off over the years, and I've enjoyed giving this a play-test! The only question I had was what "T" refers to for a card, e.g. here:
Capture.PNG
Is it a 2 of Spades? In which case, is there any reason why it's illustrated with a "T" instead of a "2"?

...ignore me, it's obviously a 10 of Spades, I've just realised - probably because there's not space to fit a two-digit number on the card!
