Please subscribe to the ABug YouTube channel! (1000 subscribers reached, 12-Mar-2023)

Post by Arcadian »

A few people have asked if the ABug videos can be uploaded to YouTube in addition to the ABug website, as apparently it's better suited to viewing on/streaming to a telly ... so I've created a new Youtube channel and over the past couple of days have uploaded all of the previous videos from May-August 2020:

https://www.youtube.com/c/ABugEvents

I've just hit the daily Youtube upload limit so I'll resume uploading the remainder from Friday - but in the mean time it would be really helpful if anybody that's enjoyed the videos so far could subscribe to the Youtube channel, as once it hits 100 subscribers we can get a custom url (instead of that 24 character monstrosity above!). Thanks.

(oh, and if you could also be kind enough to bump this thread when done, that would help keep the topic prominent in the active topics list. Ta!)

If, when visiting youtube, you use the subscriptions page as your landing point;

https://www.youtube.com/feed/subscriptions

You don't have to wade through things you're not interesting in (but the 'algorithm' thinks you are) to get to the people you follow.

Ah, there's the issue, I don't "visit" YouTube! Only go direct to a video if I see a link that looks interesting enough to to bother sitting through. Doesn't happen often.

Isn't this what browser bookmarks are for?

No wading going on here (see comment 1) :-)

So basically subscribing/following someone is just a slow tedious version of bookmarking their page. Yay, progress :?

(The YouTube algorithm doesn't really know what to do with me - it offers up All The Stations, Within Temptation videos, and ROUGOL talks! It then runs out of ideas and just throws up other random rock acts  )

It's a little more than that, when you subscribe to a channel it also alerts you when that channel posts a new video. Obviously that's less relevant if you don't have the YouTube app, but if you do, it's a nice way to hear about a new video going up. I subscribe to a fair number of retro game related channels and some of them also do live streams from time to time, which again by being a subscriber I get an alert for. The other thing is that the more subscribers a channel gets, the more features YouTube then offers to the channel's owner, so it's a way to help support and grow the channel too - which is another great reason to subscribe to the ABug channel! :D

I've subscribed. :D

Thanks for doing this - the videos were a bit sluggish when I tried the non-You Tube setup, but that could well have been my (mis-)configuration.

There's lots of great content there, so will add to my list of fun things to try and do!

Fantastic stuff. I happened upon the videos on YouTube whilst watching some other retrocomputing stuff.

I haven't done any Beeb programming since about 1986. I remember wanting to be able to do split screen modes with the 6845 and interrupts, but not having enough information back then to do it. It was great finally having it all explained in the videos by Kieran. I think I'll have a play over the next few days.

Thanks.

Hey, thanks for the sub(s)! :D

I don't think I'd want to encourage Youtube to plonk any ads on our videos though, they're a major turn off for me!!

Still it'd be good to get to 1000 subs - the calibre of the content on the channel already deserves 10 times that number of subscribers if you ask me! 8)

You have control over them, I don't see there's an issue with ads at the start or end of the video. If you started putting them mid-video I can understand the annoyance.

For the short period JASPP was monetised before YouTube retrofitted the 1000 subscriber requirement, it would easily have covered your Zoom costs in a year.

I don't generally see ads on my PCs as I have Adblock pro installed in Firefox. On my Android tablet however using the Youtube app they are a right royal pain in the ass.

Cheers.

Youtube recently-ish announced that they will (if they want) put ads on channels that aren't monetised, which sucks. So they may run them on your videos anyway!

You could sign up with Odysee (https://odysee.com/). They have the facility to auto transfer all your videos from Youtube to your account there hassle free, so no need to reupload etc. On there there are no adverts (as it's decentralised) and you get some Library Credits (a crypto currency) from them and from people that watch the videos if they wish to donate. Loads of big youtubers are now on there. I use it daily now.

One thing to note is that the mobile app is currently called Lbry (Library) as that's how it's started. It's a bit complex to explain now but briefly Lbry is the internet protocol that powers Odysee.
