Weeknight 'Virtual' Dev session #10, Thursday 28th January 2021, 7pm - 10pm (GMT)
As the new games and demo coding sections of the forum are currently very active, we are now hosting weeknight "Dev sessions" on Zoom, that are primarily focused on the development of new games and graphics/music demos for Acorn computers as well as development tools, emulators and debuggers.
They take place the week in-between the 2 x Tuesday night 'general' sessions on the Thursday evening, between 7pm and 10pm.
The sessions are intended for developers to share progress updates and request/offer help and feedback. We hope that these sessions will help motivate and encourage developers to see projects through to completion.
Just to be clear - these sessions are open to everyone: programmers, graphics artists and musicians, even if you've just got an interest/appreciation of - or ideas for - new games and demos, please come along for moral support - there may be opportunities to beta-test new versions of upcoming projects . There really isn't a limit to the number of places available - well, the maximum we can host in a Zoom meeting is 100 but it's unlikely we'll ever get anywhere near that figure!
If there are any issues you'd like help with - or would like to demonstrate something - please leave details in the thread and we'll add them to the lists of items to be covered.
If you are new to Zoom, forum member JudgeBeeb has written a handy guide to getting set up and logged in.
I've already sent invites out to most of the Dev Night regulars, but should anybody else want to attend - or if you haven't received the Zoom logins - please post in this thread and I will send them to you.

If there are any slots free, I can give a quick update on Subtilis and demonstrate some Subtilis binaries running on the Native ARM copro of PiTubeDirect.

Yes, plenty of slots left, I'll do an agenda later this afternoon and pop you in some time after 8pm ok?

Re: Weeknight 'Virtual' Dev session #10, Thursday 28th January 2021, 7pm - 10pm (GMT)
Not so much a problem, but a question.
On a Master 128 MOS 3.20 (emulated in B2) in MODE 135, HIMEM = $8000. OK. If I have a small machine code program (< 400 bytes) with a load/exec address of $7E00, this simply fails to load/run.
If I rebuild with a load/exec address of $7A00 (so that it's below the MODE 7 screen address of $7C00) it works as expected.
As a neophyte, I suspect I'm missing something everyone else knows, but what?
It's not important, I can use $7A00, just curious.

I'll be along, I'll be trying to hack mame to export the sound data for rally-x and convert it for the beeb.
Re: Weeknight 'Virtual' Dev session #10, Thursday 28th January 2021, 7pm - 10pm (GMT)
Hi, sorry I'm a bit late with this, I've shuffled a few things around hope that's ok with everyone, if not feel free to swap things about.
Note BigEd will be running the meeting tonight (thanks Ed!) though I'll be popping in and out.
19:30 - 20:00 dp11 - Raspberry Pi Pico overview
20:00 - 20:15 Free / general chat
20:15 - 20:45 MarkDRyan - Update on Subtilis, demonstrate some Subtilis binaries running on the Native ARM copro of PiTubeDirect.
20:45 - 21:15 dudleysoft71 - New Project
21:15 - 21:45 Free / general chat
21:45 - 22:00 tricky - whether he's had any luck exporting the Rally-X sound data from MAME!
Edit, tweaked it again!

Re: Weeknight 'Virtual' Dev session #10, Thursday 28th January 2021, 7pm - 10pm (GMT)
Sorry I completely messed up the sound conversion last night, although Ed seemed to enjoy it.
It took a fresh look to spot the obvious mistake (playing the 1/frequency).
Here is what I think is one loop, which is just less than 550 bytes including the player.
It is two channels and although it doesn't sound like it to me, ever sound is the same volume!
The game is New Rally-X incase you don't recognise it.
I have also taken the sample/wave table code out for now.
See what you think.
PS This track uses wave table entry 7, which seems to be a square wave, so it should sound pretty close.

I certainly did enjoy it. Quite the sneezing fit. Always a good sign.
Re: Weeknight 'Virtual' Dev session #10, Thursday 28th January 2021, 7pm - 10pm (GMT)
I like it!
There are possibly 1-2 little bits that could do with some manual tweaking perhaps, but it's certainly nice and pleasant to listen to!

I did notice a bit that seemed to have a slight squeak, but having no musical talent, I wasn't sure.
Re: Weeknight 'Virtual' Dev session #10, Thursday 28th January 2021, 7pm - 10pm (GMT)
I've played it through many times and the squeak seems to be a hiccup in the emulator as it moves around or doesn't happen at all.
There may be a place where a single note seems to be missing, but if it is, it is also missing in the arcade game.
It seems that I missed off part of the loop before, so now it is the full 25.4s AFAIK which plays in about 23s on the beeb (close as I can get it).
The music, music player and sample app to drive the player are now 641 bytes, which is a bit big, but any shorter looping is going to be far to repetitive.
