Re-worked text adventure re-released Ultimate Nightmare 2092

Post by controlbreak »

I'm pleased to tell you about my updated adventure game for the BBC / Electron, Ultimate Nightmare 2092. Ultimate Nightmare is a smallish, modest text adventure game I originally wrote back in 1992 on my Acorn Electron. My Amiga was undergoing repair and I need a programming fix, so out came my beloved previous computer for some adventure coding. I had intended to release the game to public domain but that didn't really happen at the time. In 2002 I converted to a uef and hosted it on my website where it sat pretty much without any interest until it was hosted on the Electron User Group disc (EUG#69).

I wasn't too happy with the game, there was some parser issues, typos and glaring mistakes. I made a host of changes in 2020 and am now pleased to release a much updated version.

Some of the changes made:
- Inclusion of a intro section containing background and instructions.
- Loading screen
- Improved load/save game error trapping
- Upper and lower case is now accepted
- Updated location description and character text
- More things can be EXAMined and explored
- Turn counter at the top of the screen
- Various typo/spelling errors corrected.

You can download the game in various formats from Github: https://github.com/loftcatsotware/Ultimate-Nightmare
There's video clip on YouTube: https://youtu.be/jSnd4Er_i2E
There's also a bit more info on my website: http://loftcatsoftware.x10host.com

Github also includes a map and walk-through guide.

Hi Tony,

I remember your Amstrad CPC games (later ported to Spectrum) from the Adventure Probe days.

Nice to see an enhanced version of your BBC game.

(I've just noticed that there might be a couple of games missing from your entry on CASA, so I will look at adding them later

Thanks 8bitAG. Yes there's a few more released on the Amstrad, but only Ultimate Nightmare for the Beeb/Elk at the moment (I'm hoping to write a brand new game next year) :)

Cool. I think most of your 8-bit games are preserved online... Amstrad CPC/PCW preservation is a bit patchy in general... especially all the Adventure PD stuff... There's so many public domain adventures from Debby's collection that aren't archived.

By the way, there are several reviews of your games in the Adventure Probes that are collected online (plus your other contributions). See http://8bitag.com/info/probe.html and https://zonafi.es/adventure_probe/ which is gradually being built up over time.

Goodness me I've not seen Adventure Probe for a while! I'll have a good look though that archive one evening. Ken was a very generous with his reviews, I was young and new to adventure writing at the time and he kindly overlooked a handful of spelling mistakes :)

Nice little game, thanks for uploading it.

A couple of tiny bugs e.g. it flashes up a brief message saying 'you cannot go that way' when using exits that were previously blocked, and you can only fire (not shoot?) the arrow in one place which threw me a bit.

Thank you ash73, really appreciate the feedback. I'll take a look at these things and get them improved/corrected in an update.
