All-day 'Virtual' Acorn session #8, Saturday 3rd October 2020, 9am - 11pm

Post by Arcadian »

The monthly all-day "Virtual" ABug meeting for October will take place on Sat 3rd October, running between 9am - 11pm (and in likelihood, beyond midnight).

To reserve a place, please respond in this thread and advise which session(s) you think you'll be able to attend (Morning, Afternoon, Evening).

We intend to cap the event at 50 places. Presentations are usually (but not necessarily always) recorded and will be added to the ABug.org.uk website - within one week of the event, in most cases.

The all-day events are more structured than the weeknight general sessions, but there are still opportunities for general discussion amongst the attendees so if there is something you'd like to talk about please post in the thread so the appropriate session chair(s) can take note.

If you are interested in taking a speaker/presenter slot (which are all 60 mins including Q&A, with the exception of the 'extended' evening slot, which is 90 mins) then please PM me as soon as possible, as we are actively filling the slots now.

If you've yet to attend a virtual ABug event on Zoom, Judgebeeb has produced a handy guide to take you through the process.

Thanks Kees, Nigel have added you to the list.

Have also confirmed two more talks as follows:

11:00 - 12:00
CfCH Domesday Emulator: How a browser-based BeebEm helps with digital preservation and maintaining public access.
Rhys Jones (arj).

With the Centre for Computing History recently giving access to a full web-based Domesday Emulator, this talk details the technical work undertaken in adding Domesday support into BeebEm, its compilation into Web Assembly and how the LVROM disc access code was interfaced with web network requests to allow for in-browser emulation.

13:30 - 14:30
BeebEm: Past, Present and Future.
Chris Needham (chrisn)

BeebEm, originally written by Dave Gilbert for UNIX and subsequently ported to Windows by Nigel Magnay, is arguably the oldest and most established BBC Micro emulator for the PC, having been ported to many different platforms and devices.

The current maintainer, Chris Needham will begin by overviewing the history of this popular emulator, before giving a summary of the latest changes that made it into v4.15 which was released over the summer (a mere 8 years after the last full release, v4.14!). Chris will also give a glimpse into his plans for future versions before finally taking questions and suggestions/requests for further additions and improvements.

Two more presentations/demos now confirmed! :)

15:00 - 16:00
Source code discoveries for the BBC Micro & RISC OS
Various presenters

As per subject! :)

16:30 - 17:30
Frak's Back!
Nick Pelling

Nick is creating a sequel to his 1984 BBC Micro/Electron platform game using Gamemaker Studio 2, for PC and mobile platforms.

The level designs have now been locked down so we've invited Nick along to give a talk about Frak and its origins, which will include a demonstration of Trogg's latest excursion into the world of computer games.
