New demo: 'Evil Influences' for the BBC Master

Post by VectorEyes »

Bitshifters and Desire are proud to release 'Evil Influences' for the BBC Master.

https://bitshifters.github.io/posts/pro ... ences.html

This one has been in development for many months and contains graphical techniques not previously seen on the Beeb (as far as I am aware!) It was a joint effort between Bitshifters and Desire. The last few months have been a rollercoaster of late-night development and cross-continental collaboration!

It also pushes the CRTC even harder than previous demos. To view under emulation you'll need the most recent release of B2, or alternatively JSBeeb. (Both emulators were used during development). Alternatively you can view it on youtube here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HvjhKY67fPI

Sadly this demo won't run on Masters which have a VLSI CRTC chip as its behaviour is subtly different from the more common Hitachi variants. Sorry!

I hope you enjoy it!

Positively diabolical!

I had to use JSBeeb because my Master's got the wrong type of CRTC, dammit!

Awesome release!! =D> =D> =D>
I remember you were trying to fix a bug at abug (how appropriate!) in one of the interlaced effects at the beginning of this year.

Just a quick note to say that we've released version 1.1 of Evil Influences. A number of the transitions have been tidied up, one effect in particular massively improved, and a few other minor issues addressed. It's now the version that I wish I'd shipped two months ago!

I've updated the links in the first post of this thread to point to the new version, but here they are again:

Take a look if you haven't already!

Great work!

I still go back and re-watch / re-listen from time to time :-)

Desoldered my VLSI today and replaced it with the correctly evil version :)

WOW it's stunning, and much better than the mess when I ignored the warnings :)

I can’t believe people are desoldering their CRTCs to watch Evil Influences!

One day we’ll get to the bottom of the CRTC differences and maybe even make a version that works on VLSI CRTCs. Maybe. 😀

On this topic, does anyone have a spare VLSI 6845 they’d be happy to donate to the cause of figuring out its differences vs the standard Hitachi variant?

We have some understanding of where its behaviour differs, but don’t have a full picture that would allow us to adapt the timing of register changes etc. required achieve these complex effects.

I don't have a spare, but as the unfortunate owner of a VLSI-encumbered Master who has practically zero (de)soldering skills, I applaud your cause!

Btw, I just found this:

As long as you don't release a VLSI only demo you can have the one I removed, it does still work perfectly.
