BEST REAL ARCADE GAMES ON BBC

Post by drfloyd »

Hello again, here is the frog from France :)

What are the BEST "real arcade games" conversion on BBC computer ?

I have found FROGGER (retro software) which is Arcade Perfect :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jr0H3rWzw8

ARKANOID is about perfect :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xbWtYZRF_o
Perhaps too fast ??????

PHOENIX seems near arcade perfect !
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_d3dkBmpmc

CARNIVAL, very old game, but anyway near perfect conversion

BEEP JACK (BOMB JACK) no video, but seems great

Retrosoftware seems to be the best game creator on BBC Micro ??????

What else ?

Well, you had Pacman, Joust, Tempest, Mr. Ee from memory. But the Beeb had a huge variety of games.

I don't know about other modern game publishers, but BITD we had Superior Software/Acornsoft, Alligata, Micro Power, US Gold, A&F Software, Ultima, Bug-Byte and a bunch of others.

just seen the "hack" pac man version ! Excellent !

Joust is good

Tempest not to bad (little slow)

There is also a good clone of DEFENDER.

That's good !!!!!!!

Hi drfloyd!
I don't know if you are aware of bbcmicro.co.uk ??
The search function is pretty good.
If you remember an arcade game - for instance DEFENDER, simply type in DEFENDER in the search box, and any DEFENDER clones should appear.

Try others and see how you go!

Hi, I set up the Retro Software initiative/thing/whatever you want to call it, but regards to all the astounding arcade conversions you mention (Frogger, Scramble etc) they're all pretty much the work of 'Tricky' (Richard B) alone - albeit with some assistance from community members.

You can discuss Tricky's games here:

... and other modern games here:

Mr Ee (already listed above) is a great version of Mr Do.

Monsters - Space Panic.

Repton is great (think it's roughly Boulderdash-based).

Like Lee said - spend some time on bbcmicro.co.uk - think you'll find lots on there that is familiar but with different names.

There some good clones...

But the best games are RETRO Software, with incredible conversions of arcade games (the games seems better than AMstrad or C64 versions !)

You keep making these suggestions for other people to do lots of work!

Might be time to start attaching an SSD with your code on it?

Sure we'd all love to play the games, but most of us don't have the skill or time ... :D

of course :)

It is just a dream.... and reflexion....

LIke Juno First (firt shootem up all time in my opinion)
Perhaps Popeye (great platform game)
Xevious

The legend Gradius is perhaps to complicate to convert in good conditions.... lot of sprite + scrolling... it is a next gen arcade game from 85.

It's not Gradius, but that R-Type for Amstrad  https://www.rgcd.co.uk/2012/04/r-type-1 ... e-cpc.html

A BBC Master should be able to do better that this clone.

Gradius and R-Type were the later influences for the BBC Micro game Jeltron that Gil (Spectrum Repton 1 & 2 ports) and I were writing in the 80s.

There is also a thread where I ask "what should I write next" when I finish a game (it's been a while).
