in the 24 hours prior to the event, you will receive a Private Message with the joining instructions:
Please don't share these details with anyone else. There have been reports (not involving any of our events) of gatecrashing Zoom events when the joining instructions have leaked beyond the intended participants.
Please download and install Zoom in advance. The download centre is here. For Windows and macOS you want to select "Zoom Client for Meetings" For Android, iOS and iPadOS, the links to the relevant app stores are further down the page under "Zoom Mobile Apps". Instructions for installing on Linux are here.
You should then sign up for a [free] account if you don't already have a Zoom account, via this link: https://zoom.us/signup
When creating your account, enter your name as you wish it to be displayed. The preferred format is your StarDot username followed by your real first name.
When launching Zoom, you will be presented with this screen:
Click 'Sign In' then enter your login credentials.
Then click on "Join a Meeting" which will bring you to this screen:
Copy the "Meeting ID" and password from the bottom of the Private Message you received prior to the event and enter them both.
You will then be presented with this screen:
Please note that your screen will show the image from your own webcam. My face is not part of the default settings for Zoom.
Click on "Join with Video".
On the next screen, click on "Join with Computer Audio" This will take you to the main Zoom window where, hopefully, there will be more people then just me.
In the bottom left of the screen (it may be differently located on mobile devices) is an option to "Mute" your microphone. You should keep your microphone muted at all times unless you need to speak. With a large number of attendees, open microphones can wreak havoc with the audio performance of Zoom. Moderators are able to remotely mute microphones but it is quite difficult to keep on top of this.
There is also an option to "Stop video" if, at any time, you don't want to be seen by other participants.
If you have more than one audio output or microphone connected to your device, you can manage these by clicking on the arrow next to the "Mute" button.

Finally, if you have any difficulties or questions during the meeting please feel free to ask either by posting in the main event thread or by sending a PM to one or more of the Zoom moderators.
