Re: ABUG SOUTH 24 to 26 January 2020: NOW FULL
I was having all sorts of fun with the machine, and eventually got it to boot to desktop consistently by holding down both delete and shift together.
Then I couldn't press F12 to go to supervisor prompt.
Having a play with the machine, I ran !Edit and brought up a new text document, and saw it continually filling up with the number 8. E.g., a key is 'stuck' on the keyboard. Not sure yet which 8 it is yet. Anyway, swapped the keyboard over and the second one is fine, as is the monitor, the mouse, and the IDE hard drive within.

You can configure it to only output 15khz or 31khz (or both if you have a multiscan), check the manual, but from memory if you hold down numbers 1-5 on power up it forces a monitor type.SimonSideburns wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2020 6:55 pmI added that last paragraph while no doubt you were replying. It would appear to be the case. Which does lend itself to another question regarding the A3020. Bearing in mind that it does have a VGA connector on it, does that mean that there have been a number of different standards pertaining to that style of interface over the years? Seems like I have some reading to do on the subject. My VGA monitors are flat screen models and as far as I know they aren't multisync, so I guess that's the issue. Alas I have no scan doubler.JudgeBeeb wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2020 5:43 pmI believe that A3020s used a slower sync rate (approx 15kHZ) than that available on modern VGA monitors. You need to find an old multi sync monitor or use a scan doubler.SimonSideburns wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2020 2:58 pmI'm also bringing two A3020s. I've not been able to test if they work or not as I've tried two different VGA monitors and get OUT OF RANGE messages on both (even though I've tried pressing and holding down R, Delete, 4 on the keypad, etc.).
I wonder if anyone is bringing (or can bring) a VGA monitor that does work well, and we can see if it's my machines. They do seem to beep at all the right places, and I sometimes get the initial startup screen displayed, but I don't seem to be getting much further.
So many projects, so little time...

My two Pi 2Bs are the earlier model, and I can't find my Pi 3. If I find it I'll bring it along. I'll be bringing my Pi4 anyway as part of pretty much an identical setup to last time.hoglet wrote: ↑Wed Jan 22, 2020 4:12 pm I have a small request for attendees....
BigEd and I were intending to do some testing of the next release of PiTubeDirect, which is called Fer-De-Lance (a Snake  )
If anyone has one of the following Pi Models we could borrow for a couple of hours, that would be much appreciated.Dave
- Pi 1 Model A or B revision 2.0 (26 pin header) (HW revision 0004 ..000F)
- Pi 2 Model B (later model with the BCM2837) (HW revision a22042)
- Pi 3 Model B (HW revision a02082, a22082 or a32082)
I'll install Cave on the file server, I think there was some interest in having a go at that.
Other than that there a couple of things I'm hoping to make a bit of progress with, including my 8-bit version of "!Machines", to add support for bridges, and a utility I'm writing for BeebSCSI to read information directly from the FAT filing system (such a utility already exists by the way) but my idea is that you could have a readme file associated with each LUN directory, and read that on your Beeb to remind yourself what BeebSCSI102/scsi0.dat was all about, and then mount it.
I made up a new supply of Econet terminators earlier in the week, so I'll be brazenly hawking terminators, Econet interface kits, Econet modules, 8271 disc upgrade kits and Econet clocks. I now only have 12 clocks left. (Actually there are 14 but only 12 PSU).

Re: ABUG SOUTH 24 to 26 January 2020: NOW FULL
I ventured into the metal shed today, and came out in one piece with 6 reasonably good fold-down wooden pasting tables. These don't seem to be suffering from sagging in the middle as often happens with this type of table, but I wouldn't trust them with heavy, expensive, or rare vintage computers on top of them (but for light use they would suffice). E.g. I'd rather use one to put the packs of snacks on, or for someone to sit at who is only using a reasonably lightweight modern laptop. That way, if anything happened there wouldn't be a major disaster.
It wouldn't be a bad idea if they could have a tablecloth or something thrown over them, if nothing else to save whoever is using one from getting edge-of-table marks on their wrists. I don't have any or I'd bring some. Maybe the venue have something that we could use?
I've got one raspberry pi out of a storage box, and I know I have at least a model 2 and 3 to fish out too.
Is it useful for me to bring my Music 500 and DataCentre so we can have another look at how they work together? It would mean bringing a set of powered speakers or an amplifier and speakers, but as I'm filling my van up with so much already a few extra bits really won't make much difference.
Does anyone play musical keyboard? I could bring my Hybrid Music 4000 keyboard and we could delight in your musical abilities. I'm rubbish myself. I can't get my left hand and right hand to do things simultaneously, except when it comes to touch typing and game playing, and I never seem to be able to remember the tunes.

Re: ABUG SOUTH 24 to 26 January 2020: NOW FULL
Sorry to mirror my post for anyone on the FB group.... but...
I've got the Clef Music Synth out, dusted off my BBC Master, replaced the batteries and booted up my MMC. Good news is ... It's alive! Ready to take to ABUG for a demo, circuit board photography and ROM ripping...
Also - does anyone have any BBC computer compatible ROMs they fancy selling? I could do with a couple or so.
I'm also bringing my two turtles. I've never been able to get them going... so hopefully this weekend will be the time for them to come to life! I'm really not sure what I need in total, but I know I have the cables. I think I may have a ROM (but if not, if any kind generous soul sells me some ROMs I should be able to blow one using my burner). I think someone kindly sent me a copy of the software, but if not perhaps we might be able to track it down.
SimonSideBurns:
But it does sound great!
I'll also bring a Raspberry Pi and my Teletext adapter, just in case there's time to get it going.
Paul.

Finally, it would be awesome to pit the Music 5000 and 4000 kit against the CLEF. The software was never a finished piece - its rather clunky compared to the more developed Music 5000 kit. To load the Synth, you need to press 1-9 or Shift 1-9 to select an instrument, then M to load the menu, then 7 to Play or record a sequence, then O to turn the keyboard on with the selected instrument. And then if you want to change the instrument, you have to do it all again. I'm sure I even missed a step there too!Is it useful for me to bring my Music 500 and DataCentre so we can have another look at how they work together? In the unlikely event that there is room in my car, I'll try to remember to bring my rather large and rather loud speaker.

As with last time, there will be name badges for everyone. There are a lot of us attending, including a few newcomers. So I am sure it would be appreciated if everyone could wear their badge.

I'll be bringing my badge from last time!
Re: ABUG SOUTH 24 to 26 January 2020: NOW FULL
I'll be one of those attending for the first time, so thanks for the badge suggestion.
However, as I'm unfortunately only able to attend on Saturday afternoon,
and my time is therefore short, please forgive me for doing my introductions here:
My name is Jeremy Rayner, and I currently work as a Software Engineer in London.
As with many of you, I learnt to program on my BBC Micro back in the day, and this month
I have been archiving my old software creations for the Beeb from floppy discs (via GoTek) onto SSD images.
I have recapped my original Beeb, and it works brilliantly... for the first five minutes, and
then it starts to get screen corruptions and freeze ups.
I'm presuming that heat is affecting something, but I'm not sure what exactly,
I'd appreciate any advice on that. [Is there room for me to bring my Beeb, I could bring my small card table perhaps?]
(and also my Beeb's delete key doesn't work, so any tips on fixing that too)
I'm going to bring along a couple of Beeb related software projects that I've worked on.
In the last month I have ported BeebEm over to a retro handheld gaming device (the RG350 [which is SDL based]),
so I will be able to demonstrate the handheld emulator running Citadel, Repton etc. viewtopic.php?f=4&t=18518
(I'll also bring the LDK device which also can run the BeebEm emulator)
About 18 years ago I ported Christian Pinder's "Elite: The New Kind" from C to Java,
so if you want to see a pure Java version of the 'reverse engineered' BBC Elite code,
I'll be happy to demo that as well. http://javanicus.org/screenshots.html
Most of all I'll be really interested to meet each of you and see your setups.
See you tomorrow.

Please do bring your Beeb along. I am sure there will be someone who would be happy to look at it for you. Don't worry about bringing your own table just for a few hours on Saturday. There will be space for it.

Good luck...he's much bigger (but not as loud) as the previous one.
Re: ABUG SOUTH 24 to 26 January 2020: NOW FULL
It is looking likely that I won't be able to make it until 7ish Saturday evening, so if someone wants my "with kit" place for Saturday I'd rather it not be wasted.
If I can make it, I'll just sit in the bar and chat
Either way, Carol and I should be there for the mean, M25 permitting.

Re: ABUG SOUTH 24 to 26 January 2020: NOW FULL
Damn and double damn. I was really looking forward to tomorrow - but I didn’t realise that I had to pay in advance (and I clearly haven’t logged in to this forum recently enough). Makes sense of course.
I just logged on to find out who I had to pay because, much as I want to come, I fell off my bike, hard, and I’m nursing a broken arm and bust up shoulder. I’m not going anywhere - but I was concerned that my non-attendance would result in someone being out of pocket. So I suppose the silver lining to my arm is that someone else has paid already and will be attending. Phew.
I still really want to get my Beeb going though. Are there any events, or any experts, in the Oxford / Bicester / Aylesbury area - or within 10 to 20 miles of them that I could consult?
Enjoy the event tomorrow - and I’m sorry for being crap about not knowing the procedure @judgebeeb. I wasn’t ignoring you deliberately.

In lieu of a local expert, I'd be happy to try again with the remote-diagnosis approach if you want to resurrect your old thread in the hardware section. (I've just noticed that you posted about getting a basic scope, but I seem to have missed it at the time.) That way we can "drown our sorrows" about not being at the ABug meet, together.

Phoebe and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and she's unsurprisingly flaked out on the bed now and I'm about to do the same.
I was socialising so much I have failed to take any photographs yet.
Any idea what sort of time the room will be opening in the morning? I guess any time from 8am onwards as soon as breakfast starts. I doubt I'll be up that early unless Phoebe wakes early.
