Re: Acorn World and ABUG meetup, Cambridge 20-22nd September 2019
Some feedback from the last ABUG @ Cambridge from Adrian.. for requests to retrieve items from the archive, we should try to batch up the requests ahead of the event and they can then be gathered together by staff/volunteers beforehand.
I'll create a list, starting with pernod's request above.

Thanks, I must've seen that in the past but not appreciated what it was. Your ROM image is 16K but the Hektor use 4K ROMs. I'll investigate and start another thread elsewhere with any further questions.jgharston wrote: ↑Sat Jul 13, 2019 8:12 pmI've got the HECTOR 1 here.Pernod wrote: ↑Thu Jul 11, 2019 12:05 pm and some non-Acorn machines if time permits:

Hi,
Is there is any software preservation happening at this meeting?
If so, could I ask for *any* of the following to be preserved please:
Connect 4 - KayDee Software - CH42869 - software and inlay scans
Draughts - Touchmaster Software - CH48447 - software and inlay scans
Exhibition Six - Kansas Software - CH21159 - software and inlay scans
Murgatroyds - Collins Software - CH46251 - Software and inlay scans - Probably not for the BBC?
No Name - R. Soft - CH17708 - Software and inlay scans
Personal Quiz Package - Colisoft CH18735 - Software and inlay scans
Space Fighter - Program Power - CH21826 - Software and inlay scans - Probably not for the BBC?
Ashes Of Empire - Emjay Software - CH48455 - Software and inlay scans
Time Traveler - Sulis - CH21038 -Software and inlay scans (1983)
Wolfpack - Doctor Soft - CH20192 - Software and inlay scans
Questprobe - The Hulk - Adventure International - CH13035 - Software only
Mystery Fun House - Adventure International - CH20161 - Software only
Pyramid Of Doom - Adventure International - CH20160 - Software only
Also, Instant BBC Micro machine code CH12442 and CH31597 which I presume are both books but one item could be software?
Thank you,
Lee.

Re: Acorn World and ABUG meetup, Cambridge 20-22nd September 2019
I'd like to try and get archived any 6809 based Sytem material they have, I believe I dumped the ROMS at a previous meeting, I'll bring my shuttle PC that has a 5.25" drive and will read single density disks.
Cheers.

I don't think Lee will be attending. Would anyone mind scanning and/or archiving the items below? Anyone volunteering would need their own gear at the event to do this. If so please let me know and I'll arrange for the items to be retrieved..

I can bring my scanner I live just around the corner, if need be. Also the museum does software preservation, I believe. If they are rare I'm sure Jason Fitzpatrick from the museum would be interested. They have the equipment upstairs, I believe. You'll have to ask CCfCH though. Read in one thread someone is bringing their shuttle computer that can read single floppies. But I guess you need 5 1/4 inch since these are BBCs, correct?jbnbeeb wrote: ↑Sat Aug 10, 2019 12:58 pm I don't think Lee will be attending. Re: Acorn World and ABUG meetup, Cambridge 20-22nd September 2019
Hi,
I believe most of the software I have highlighted is on cassette, so it would need a cassette deck and some sounds recording equipment to make a WAV which we could look at later, or, if you have the skills... you could save off all the files from tape to disc, but this increases the time needed and the chance of errors...

If time is tight, it is just the 2 game articles I am most interested in, but it would be good to get the whole (very small) magazine scanned as it is MIA.
Thanks,
Lee.

Re: Acorn World and ABUG meetup, Cambridge 20-22nd September 2019
That may have been me, shuttle has 3.5" and 5.25" drives in and has Dos, WinXP and Linux on the SSD. Odd thing is when I got the machine the BIOS only supported one floppy drive, though the hardware supports 2 One hacked BIOS later and I fixed that.....riscman wrote: ↑Thu Aug 15, 2019 10:34 am I can bring my scanner I live just around the corner, if need be. Would it be possible for someone to scan this?

would also be interesting, because this disk image hasn't been imaged as far as I can tell.

You are right, no worries – I am very hopeful that dv8 can succeed.
But as it turns out, these two Acornsoft lisp items seem not to have been imaged yet. Would it be possible to digitize these two, perhaps with their inlay/box scans?

Re: Cambridge Sept 2019 archiving thread
Regarding archiving:
- The museum do have a pc or two with scanners in the "attic" they use for archiving. But it's a bit messy up there and I think they'd be reluctant to have us up there in any numbers. Even if one of us went up there .. if it's a warm day, it can get very hot up there, and further , it would surely be a bit lonely isolated from the rest of the Abug attendees!
- Hence I think it'd be better for someone with their own kit to archive in the classroom.
- It takes time to retrieve all the items. Therefore I only want to ask them to fetch the items if we're definitely going to attempt to archive. I can see that many are tapes. The museum definitely does not archive tapes to digital as part of their usual archiving effort.
...so with all that said .. of leenew's list.. what shall we pick / who will kindly volunteer to scan/ record (riscman possibly)? I ask this in context that many items would need a tape deck + relevant kit+software to get the audio to wav file.
Thanks,
Jason

If at all possible, it would be great to archive the Bitstik multi-plotter driver as I don't think we have a copy of it anywhere.

Wonderful!!! I am very grateful for the SSD image file! I have been looking for it for a long time.
-- also, do you happen to have the book from David E's DVD, because his upload seems to be damaged (same for the Comal book).

Re: Cambridge Sept 2019 archiving thread
Hi all,
I appreciate that people are eager to have things archived. A few posts up.. I tried to ask if there was anyone happy bring archiving kit and be happy to scan (or sample via tape recorder in the case of cassettes). I think riscman has suggested he'll do some archiving but I think he's only coming on the Sunday. There's no way one person can get through all the items requested so far.
I'm reluctant to ask staff/volunteers retrieve so many items if they're not going to be archived. Can I gently ask again if there are any volunteers to archive over the ABUG weekend?
Thanks,
Jason

Do me a favour and load the Hulk tape.
Does it mention the version being by Brian Howarth? Or Mak Jukic?
Cheers

I'd be happy to help with tape archive or scanning if needed? I can do it in between showing bbc tv stuff?
I have a scanner or two I can bring.
Re tape archive, what's the "usual practice" for this?

Re: Cambridge Sept 2019 archiving thread
Cheers BillC
It seems most (if not all) Hulk tapes feature the Mak Jukic version.....
I am hoping to find a Brian Howarth version.
For those that are wondering what I am talking about, Adventure Intentional UK released 2 versions of a lot of the Scott Adams adventure games. Some were converted by Brian and some by Mak.
Brian versions of Mystery fun house and Hulk would fill in some gaps...
