ABUG Cambridge 28th - 30th June 2019 BOOKING THREAD - Now FULL

Post by 1024MAK »

Please note that this event is now FULL for the Saturday

Hello everyone,

I'm pleased to announce another ABUG meet-up at the Cambridge Centre for Computing History over the weekend of 28th - 30th June 2019 :D

This is the forth year they're hosting us, which is great news :D

Please note that there will be slightly fewer tables available this year than in previous years. So if you wish to attend, please post in this thread clearly stating the days you would like to attend on, if you want a full table to yourself, half a table or not bringing kit (aka a "No-Kitter" :) ).

Space wise, there will be:
- 10 full tables (1 table per person)
- 10 half-tables (2 people per table, total of 5 tables)
- up to five people with no kit.

Entrance fee

I have just been informed that the museum has increased it’s prices (prices correct as at Sunday 16th June).

The museum entrance fee is now £9 per person per day for adults.
- If you are attending the event for the entire weekend (two or more days), the fee will be £18 - to be paid as an £9 museum entrance fee on two consecutive days (e.g. on Saturday and Sunday).
- If you are attending for one day, then the fee will be £9.
- Please inform the staff that you are attending as an ABUG attendee.
- Just as any other paying visitor, you're free to wander around the museum and play with all the retro computers they have!

Dates
Friday 28th June - 4.00pm til late (no earlier than 4.00pm please, as we don't get the room until then)
Saturday 29th June - 9.00am til late
Sunday 30th June - 9.00am-4.00pm

Dave Hitchins will be helping out with getting the room ready on the Friday afternoon and on the Sunday afternoon to restore the room back after we leave. I would be very grateful if some other ABUG attendees could assist him in anyway they can. Please contact him if you can offer help. We would like the goodwill we have with the museum to continue.

Address
Centre for Computing History

Coldhams Road

Acorn & BBC Micro User Group (ABug) meet-ups are open to enthusiasts of the BBC Micro, Acorn Electron, Atom and Archimedes/RISC OS machines.

Attendees will typically stay for two if not all three days. The meets are always very informal and can involve:
- members bringing their own hardware to set up and show off
- time spent working on hardware and programming/games projects
- exchange of ideas/knowledge
- upgrade and repair of poorly Acorn machines
- collaborative work on community projects, such as software preservation, preparation/planning for displays at other events etc.
- sale of items by members (not guaranteed, but there are often opportunities to buy bits)
- general socialising, food/drink and the odd hi-score competition!

Accommodation
These are the hotels that people stayed at in previous years:

Oakley Lodge hotel
627-631 Newmarket Rd, Cambridge CB5 8PA
It's just over a mile away from the museum.

Travelodge Cambridge Newmarket Road Hotel
180-190 Newmarket Road
Cambridge
Cambridgeshire
CB5 8HF

If you have any other recommendations, please let me know so that I can post the details here.

Food and drink
Friday night - previously, we've ordered take out pizzas and brought our own beer.

Saturday night - previously, we've booked a table for us all at the same local pub as in previous years, as everyone seemed happy with it. It isn't a large menu but good and reasonably priced with vegetarian options. It's about 15 mins walk from the venue. As neither myself or Jason are able to attend this event, it will require someone else to arrange this if you want to do the same again. If there are any difficulties with this, Jason is happy to help with the booking.

For lunch: the museum has a snack bar for tea, coffee, soft drinks, chocolate, crisps etc . There are a couple of fast food places nearby as well as an M&S (and I *think* an ASDA) for sandwiches etc.

Parking
Parking is available at the museum. Note that hotels may charge additional fees for parking. In previous years, some folks have left their cars overnight in the museum car park (including me) at their own risk.

Can you put me down as a 'tentative' for half a table. It looks like this may be the weekend of my university 30 year reunion and if that goes ahead, I will not be able to come.

Forget that, I hate reunions; they are always stuffy affairs. Put me down for all three days. Half a table please (with a warning that I may be making noise).

I usually sprawl to many tables. Put me down for half a table and I will go on a diet.

Sat and Sun.

Thanks.

Put me down as a no kitter for Saturday only.
I'll hopefully utilise other attendees to do some ROM/floppy imaging, need to create a list of wanted items.

Book me down for the Saturday only, please. Ideally I should like a full table somewhere so that I may archive some of the museum's software. [-o<

I shall be bringing a laptop and scanner for archiving the documentation and a Master with Datacentre, tape deck and dual floppies for rescuing the software. :D

I'll most probably not be able to make this one as I'll be on holiday (on the Isle of Wight) the week before so most probably won't make it back in time.

If I do come it will be a flying visit on Sunday, and won't have any kit with me.

Cheers.

Hi,

I'd like to come Friday, leaving Sunday afternoon, half table should be perfect, or full table if no half's left?

Also happy to help setup, and work through and museum kit that needs work / alternatively I've a few projects I'm working through and could spend some time on!

Cheers,

Paul.

I'll be there from Saturday morning until Sunday afternoon, not planning to bring any kit.

I might have to leave Saturday evening, but will still stay for the meal before heading off :D

As Jason is not attending, what's the situation for requesting access to museum items for archiving? I only have a short list at the moment of floppies and ROMs (some not Acorn related). Will post a list in due course.

Last year I utilised Phill for the ROM dumping, but he's not attending. Is anyone else able to volunteer their services for this task? At the moment I'm looking at the Spectrum prototype and the rare HH Tiger, if they're made available. Probably some BBC ROMs too.

Also, who's the resident floppy archiver (flaxcottage?). At the moment I think I only have a couple of requests relating to Atom and System, so don't expect to take too much of anyone's time.

If you can get a chance any software for the System 6809 card would be good to test my clone out :) I know they have a System 3 with a 6809 card as it was out last time I was there.

It was that and the floppy in the Prophet that are on my most wanted list.

I thought people might like a heads up, it seems that the date is a busy time in Cambridge [1] as such it seems that hotel prices are a bit more expensive than usual and there is less availability.

Probably worth booking earlier rather than later.

(I've booked a slightly more distant travelodge to save myself 50 quid, but with an added 15 min car journey)

[1] I think this is caused by this being one of the Cambridge university graduates dates.

I only handle BBC disks in DFS and ADFS flavours. If they are protected then that might be a 'no' in the time available because some protection can take days to crack. :? Unprotected disks should be easy to do. :D

Thanks, not expecting anything protected, just simple 100K DFS. My only concern is their condition.

I can put this on my list, and take photos on my phone if that's acceptable, unless there's a scanner I can utilise.

Since this is on my doorstep, I think it'd be rude of me not to at least attempt to try to attend.

Put me down as a no-kitter for now, and if there's any no-shows, my lock up is around the corner so I can always drag my setup out.

If I get my viewdata / teletext stuff working, I'd probably like to show that off ... but I'm still faffing with that at the moment alas.

I must get around to getting them to show me their communitel setup too.

Is that okay ?
