Stunt Car Racer for BBC Master
Stunt Car Racer for BBC Master
Hello everyone,
Thank you all for being so patient but we're finally pleased to announce that we've released our port of Stunt Car Racer for the BBC Master!
Further info including the disc image download can be found on our Bitshifters page: https://bitshifters.github.io/posts/pro ... -beeb.html
I want to extend my huge thanks to my collaborators on this project:
Tom Seddon for his original C64 disassembly comments, which were invaluable in helping me get started, then for jumping in to write code and move the port from black & white to MODE 5 colour in about a week! Also for writing all the graphics conversion tools, sprite routines and much more. Without this you'd still be waiting for the release in the summer.
Dethmunk for providing awesome new artwork for the title & credits screen, all new menus screens and in-game graphics. Also for helping pick the initial palette after I struggled to make things look not horrible in just 3-bits of colours.
hexwab for the optimisations and bringing a fresh pair of eyes & incredible attention to detail as we approached the finish line. Most crucially it was his idea to introduce a mid-screen palette swap to give us 5 colours and really lift the appearance of the game.
simonm for his VGM awesomeness, including the Python tools to convert the 'Out Run Europa' YM tune from the Atari ST to the Beeb's SN sound chip. He also brought a brand new VGM compression scheme & player that meant we could fit it all in SWRAM.
Feel free to use the thread in the Project forum for technical discussions (like why Master only, not BBC + SWRAM - sorry folks )
We hope you enjoy playing the game! Do let me know if you find any bugs or other issues.

Fantastic work Kieran, you're a machine!

Great work from Kieran and the guys again. Love working on your projects guys. Amazing what the 8bit Acorns can do when you flex their muscles.

Great work and well done for using mode 1
Re: Stunt Car Racer for BBC Master
What’s remarkable is how smooth and fluid it feels. It plays exactly like the amiga version, which is quite amazing.
Re: Stunt Car Racer for BBC Master
Love it. My Master Loves it. I'm rubbish at it. It's amazing.
Re: Stunt Car Racer for BBC Master
Amazing work!
I've been playing the other 8-bit versions a bit over the last few months and this is easily the best. Just feels so right to see it on the Beeb - a truly worthy successor to Revs

I love it - and its so fast!
I have not had the time to fully appreciate the technical aspects yet, but I look forward to doing so.

Re: Stunt Car Racer for BBC Master
I don’t know what to say that hasn’t been said before...
Definitely a brilliant work!
I’m most surprised by how fast and smooth the game is.
Keep up the good work!

Here’s a quick video of this great game:
https://youtu.be/0S_L6OKQjIg
I’m not sure why the rgbtohdmi has a problem syncing with the pre-titles menu? I have to disable mode7 in the rgbtphdmi’s menu to get the options to display

Re: Stunt Car Racer for BBC Master
Oh, interesting... thanks for the report! The Mode 7 display is slightly wider than normal, so that it can be perfectly centred. (You lose 1 column from the control codes, so it's 41 chars wide, giving you 40 columns of actual text.) Perhaps the RGB2HDMI doesn't handle this.trixster wrote: ↑Sat Mar 09, 2019 5:46 pm Here’s a quick video of this great game:

Re: Stunt Car Racer for BBC Master
Congratulations! Such a fast moving and smooth version, too!
Re: Stunt Car Racer for BBC Master
I plugged up my Master yesterday and fired it up. Very well polished and playable. Well done to all involved.
Re: Stunt Car Racer for BBC Master
Excellent work as usual.
I'm playing around today trying to decide which games to use in the Wakefield High Score Challenge and couldn't resist testing SCR.
A bit unfair that I finished last due to alphabetical order! I'll just have to try harder, or change my name to Aardvark.
One tiny issue, I saved the Hall of Fame and when I tried to reload it I got an error - incorrect format I think - it loaded on the second attempt though. This using a gotek. I'll be doing this often so I'll be able to inform you if it's a regular thing.
The music is fantastic too but it's highlighted a problem with my master in that the audio output has a lot of noise so I'll be starting another thread about that soon.
