I do actually think it’ll be a shame if the old theme can’t be restored, but I agree that saving the content is the most important thing.

I'm sure it can be restored ... just who wants to do it?
Looks fairly simple (in concept) - copy the prosilver directory in the themes directory to a new one called RetroSoftwareRed and tweak the files in there. (That's pretty much what was done for the old version of the site ... but the 3.2.x version theming is a bit different.)
You then choose the theme in the admin.
I find CSS & design stuff to be so that's why I didn't go much further. Definitely not rocket science and doable just a bit too fiddly for my liking.
