ABUG Cambridge Sept 7th-9th 2018 BOOKING THREAD

Post by jbnbeeb »

Hi everyone,

**All table spaces taken**

** That said - if you're happy to come along and not have a space at a table..you're welcome to come along as a regular museum visitor and drop by the "classroom" where the event is taking place. The museum is a most excellent place for anyone interested in vintage computers from the late 60s to the present day. Most stuff is hands on and a great trip down memory lane. **

** UPDATE. Another reason to come along as a visitor for the day! **
The museum will have an "Acorn World" display in the main hall.
See link ***

I'm pleased to announce another ABUG meetup at the Cambridge Centre for Computing History over the weekend of 7th-9th September 2018 !!

This is the third year they're hosting us - and I think it's nice they prompted me rather than the other way round ("when do you want to do another Acorn meetup?")

For the event, the fee is £16 - equivalent of two days museum admission fee. This is to be paid to the museum at the main desk when you arrive. Just as any other paying visitor, you're free to wander around the museum and play with all the retro computers they have!

Friday 7th Sept - 4.00pm til late
Saturday 8th Sept - 9.30am til late
Sunday 9th Sept - 9.30am-4.00pm

Address
Centre for Computing History
Rene Court
Coldhams Road
Cambridge
CB1 3EW
http://www.computinghistory.org.uk

Acorn & BBC Micro User Group (ABug) meetups are open to enthusiasts of the BBC Micro, Acorn Electron, Atom and Archimedes/RISC OS machines.

Attendees will typically stay for two if not all three days. The meets are always very informal and can involve:
- members bringing their own hardware to set up and show off
- time spent working on hardware and programming/games projects
- exchange of ideas/knowledge
- upgrade and repair of poorly Acorn machines
- collaborative work on community projects, such as software preservation, preparation/planning for displays at other events etc.
- sale of items by members (not guaranteed, but there are often opportunities to buy bits)
- general socialising, food/drink and the odd hi-score competition!

Accommodation
I'll add to this if I get more info from peeps who went last year

Oakley Lodge hotel
627-631 Newmarket Rd, Cambridge CB5 8PA
..some folks stayed here last year. It's just over a mile away from the museum.

Travelodge Cambridge Newmarket Road Hotel
180-190 Newmarket Road
Cambridge
Cambridgeshire
CB5 8HF

Food and drink
Friday night - previously, we've ordered take out pizzas and brought our own beer.

Saturday night - I've booked a table for us all at the same local pub as last year as everyone seemed happy with it. It isn't a large menu but good and reasonably priced with vegetarian options. It's about 15 mins walk from the venue.
http://www.the-geldart.co.uk

For lunch: the museum has a snack bar for tea, coffee, softdrinks, chocolate, crisps etc . There are a couple of fast food places nearby as well as an M&S (and I *think* an ASDA) for sandwiches etc.

Parking
Parking is available at the museum. Note that hotels may charge additional fees for parking. In previous years, some folks have left their cars overnight in the museum car park (including me) at their own risk.

Please can you put me down as likely but not 100% certain - should know by the end of the week. If I do come, it will be for all three days.

Gah! I’m not likely going to be able to make this one as it’s my father-in-law’s birthday that weekend. Will have to see nearer the time if I can make it for a day. :(

Tentatively yes for at least one day, off the back of the fun I had at the Southern ABUG meet. Tentaive as I am still trying to persuade my wife to let me out (I am only allowed to have fun a fixed number of days a year).

Sounds like a good event. Maybe I'll stay down there at one of those newfangled hotels people keep talking about.

It will be a great opportunity to archive some MIA educational stuff.

Me for the weekend . . . but I'll need to confirm later!

I need to return an Acorn Plus 3 that I took away at the last meeting (2 years ago?). It just was't working - and didn't when I got it into my workshop. However, the second time I tried it, several days later, it worked just fine and I haven't been able to fault it since. Bashed it, poked it - still works . . .

Can confirm this -- it's just on the other side of the railway bridge.

Is it necessary to book this in advance, or can we just rock up on the weekend? I live within walking distance, but I'm somewhat at the mercy of other factors.

Depends if you want to bring kit along and have desk space available for you. If you just want to look around, you can just "rock up". AFAIK.

Not unless some poor soul has a desperate desire to see my cruddy, unfinished homemade computer (two Cortex M3s, 512K VGA board I designed in KiCAD, video memory bus connected over old ATA cables ). I should post that mess on here sometime.

Put me down for whole weekend, with some kit.

IIRC they’ve got a working A680 there with appropriate flavour of riscix. Could do with cloning that onto my 680.

Hi folks,
I've just updated the first post with attendees and tentatives.

Please note I added in the order posted. There's quite a number of people on the tentative list. If you're on the tentative list and at some point in position to confirm , PLEASE PM ME (including which day arriving and leaving). I'll add you to Attendees list as soon as I can.

I'll continue adding to the Attendee list in the order that requests arrive if people indicate that they're booking up front rather than tentatively. Please state which day arriving/leaving.

In response to feedback I've received:
- The number of slots is slightly less than last year so that there is a bit more space for everyone in the room
- I'll put a table plan together when we're nearer to the time of the event
- Also closer to the time - 3 weeks from the event date - I'll PM each person on the attendee list requesting confirmation of attendance. The reason for this is that in previous years, one or two people haven't shown up to the event without letting me know - which is a shame as it prevented people on the "reserved" list getting a table once the booking list was full.

Thanks all.

As Ian posted - if want to have table space - yes booking is needed. If you'd just like to pop along for an hour or two without table space (as part of a general museum visit) - suggest you come along as a regular museum visitor.
