Thanks!

Lee has managed to backdate the tape release of the game to 1982.

We still aren't sure about the year(s) in which the official disc versions of some of the Level 9 games were released.

I think I might have found an Archimedes port of "Magic and Mayhem"; Original from 1991, port in 2002?

Think I've come across another game missing from the Games Archive.

Last week I was contacted by Steve Barrett, an author for Paean Systems, who had a number of discs and some documentation for software he wrote for Paean Systems back in 1984/1985. Steve very kindly offered his archive to me in the hope that it could be published and preserved.

Amongst the educational titles were some games and one of these is Pontoon. This was prepared but never released by Paean Systems.

Tim Gilberts posted an advert for his Gilsoft Spectrum "Munchman" from October that year, recently, mentioning that they had to stop selling the game due to a letter from Atari. I wonder if those sorts of letters prompted a few Pac Man clone name changes at the time... It definitely didn't seem to stem the tide... there were still so many "Munch-man" games released in the following years!

Met him down the pub the other week after the Retro Computer Festival, knew the name was familiar but didn't know where from at the time.

Good spot!
Removing horses from his sale won't affect the price he gets for the bundle.
Have you offered anything for the tape Aran?

Maybe ask if he is willing to sell it separately?
Explain it is for preservation etc....

EDIT: looking carefully at the text on the packaging, this looks to be some kind of careers advice software?

No, because:
a) I didn't want to encourage the seller into thinking he had something valuable - which he doesn't - the game is going to be appalling!
b) Others here have had success with asking nicely to borrow items and then returning them.
c) I'm fiscally challenged right now!

Arcadian wrote: Sun Jan 03, 2021 6:01 am The Flags tape arrived, but despite being labelled for the BBC it doesn't sound anything like a BBC Micro recording. MakeUEF certainly doesn't want to know.

Take a listen for yourself - anyone recognise the format? Or is it just an incorrectly recorded BBC Micro recording?!
I know this is from a while ago, but I managed to recover a working .uef from Arcadian's recording, see attached.

As already identified by PitfallJones, the recording is for the BBC but is the wrong speed, presumably a cassette duplication error. It needed to be adjusted to 0.75X the recorded speed.

I had to make significant adjustments to the bass and volume in Audacity to get MakeUEFAm v2.3 to recognise most of the blocks. -30dB bass reduction, followed by -12dB bass reduction and +12dB volume boost, seemed to work best. I'm not sure why this is the case and it required a bit of trial and error.

Beyond that, the recording still had many corrupted blocks with side 2 being far worse overall than side 1, and I needed to mix and match blocks from both sides of the tape to recover the whole thing. I pasted each side's recording into a separate track in Audacity and then did some simple copies and pastes of individual blocks based on the errors I was getting in MakeUEFAm.

Block 1B was tricky though as it was corrupted on both sides of the tape, I had to manually inspect the waveform and then patch side 1's recording of that block with a very small speed-adjusted section from side 2.

Anyway, export the raw audio from Audacity (this is in the .zip file for those interested), run it through MakeUEFAm, and this is the end result. I'll leave it up to others to decide if it was worth the effort! It's a BASIC program that displays flags, not really a game. It's not the same thing as IJK's Flags as found on bbcmicro.co.uk - that seems to be a lot more polished. I still got a kick out of getting this working and loading it into BeebEm for the first time.

I joined Stardot specifically to post this, but I'll have more to contribute soon I hope. (I have a large cache of BBC tapes and disks left to me by my Dad and I'm slowly starting to work through them.)
