2 Mystery Games...

Post by leenew »

Hi,
I have been trawling hundreds (and hundreds) of old magazines, trying to attribute each type-in game that we have to its respective magazine.

I have a couple (for now...) that I can't find.

We have this: http://bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=1136
Attributed to Acorn User, but as far as I can see, it does not originate from any Acorn User.

Also, this: http://bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=1465
which we have attributed to beebug magazine. Again, I cannot find it in any Beebug.

Now, I may have missed them of course :D

But, can anyone tell me the origins of these 2 games?
Thanks,
Lee.

Re: Adventure by Bob Anderson

Bob Anderson wrote a different game called 'Cosmonaut' that appears on the Beebug Cover disk 3-10.
I found no other reference to him.

By the way do you have OCRs of the Beebug magazines?

Thanks PJ
I only have PDFs of the mags.
OCR listings of the games from the first 9 issues of Beebug would be great. I have discs for all other games after that.

Volume 1:

1-2 Bomber

1-3 Maze-Trap

1-4 Chunky Invaders

1-5 Higher/Lower

1-5 Hangman

1-6 Aliens

1-8 Breakout

1-9 Five Dice

Hi Leenew, I've just downloaded Bob Anderson's Adventure disc and looking at the files are you sure this is a type-in game?
There is one small BASIC loader file and then the main game written in assembly language plus a number of data files.
Perhaps Acorn User released a games disc sometime in 1985 / 1986 ?

Hi fuzzel.
I have no idea. It's a mystery.
They have at some point been attributed to Acorn User and Beebug, but when or why I don't know.
I can't find any mention of them in the mags.
I don't fancy looking through them again. My eyes are square

I notice this youtube video says it
is loosely based on Adventure for the Atari 2600.
No reference though.

Ah! That's interesting Paul. I never spotted that, but it's fairly obvious once you know.
Still no idea where it came from though :-k

Hi,
Here is another one: http://bbcmicro.co.uk/game.php?id=1492
We have it attributed to "Fast Access", but I can't see it on the Fast Access discs.
Any ideas where it came from?

Bob Anderson's "Adventure" was re-discovered by Mick as the last game on the Acorn User Games Compendium. This is a tape I thought I had recently checked
The game never appeared in the magazine, but it *is* mentioned as being a "bonus" game in the magazine advertisement for the compendium tape.
So that one is now solved.
Any clues for the other two?

For no particular reason I added URLs to the games listed, and noted you had the same list on each of the game pages apart from 3D Maze. Can you check I got the correct one - I note that none are credited to Acorn User. In fact the one I picked is wrong because it is published too late.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for that.
I am glad you did it as I always make a mess of HTML!
Yeah, you had linked to the wrong "3D Maze". It was a bit confusing as we had it as "Maze". I have altered it to "Maze (AKA 3D Maze)", and linked to the correct one now :D
