ABUG SOUTH 1 to 3 June 2018 (Hampshire) BOOKING THREAD

Post by JudgeBeeb »

28 May: The venue has confirmed that the room is not being used during the day on Friday, so we can go in as early as we like. However, at present, I am planning to be to be there by about 3pm. Otherwise we have the room from 8am each morning and we have to be out by midnight each night.

Plus, plenty of spaces still remain, so spread the word...

10 May: There are still plenty of slots available (and I believe there are also rooms available at the hotel for those that want to stay there). So do let me know if you would like to come. This is a great opportunity to come along if you have never attended before or are new to the Acorn scene. We are a very friendly bunch and no particular knowledge or expertise is expected in order to enjoy the weekend.

I am pleased to announce that we finally have a venue for a Southern ABUG.

The meet will take place from Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd June 2018 at The Ely, London Road, Blackwater, CAMBERLEY, Hampshire, GU17 9LJ .
b6a14eb20c45a4735ad01e04ea685cbd.jpg
It is a combined hotel and pub/restaurant. It is part of the same group as The Fieldhead Hotel in Leicestershire and is run by the same guy who was the manager at The Fieldhead when we first went there in January 2017. The set up is very much the same. The meeting room is just off the bar. The menu is the same as The Fieldhead. They have a spiffing carvery for Sunday lunch (which I treated myself to when I went to look round). :-D :-D

The venue is a short distance from J4a of the M3 and pretty close to the M4 too. There is a reasonable amount of parking on site. There is a nearby station at Blackwater which is 8 minutes by car (and, as usual, I am sure that there will be volunteers to do pick-ups). It is just a branch line but is only 20 minutes by train from Reading and less than an hour from London Paddington.

Now the big news :!: : The meeting room is much bigger than anywhere else we have been in recent years. The official capacity is 110 (although I think that is perhaps a bit sporting). However, we can comfortably accommodate 40 people with a full table each and plenty of room to pass between tables. At present, therefore, I am not planning on putting any limit on the number of places. I suspect there will be room enough for all.

The room also contains a large projector screen. So, if anyone has a Beeb compatible projector and cable they can bring along, I am sure there will be much fun to have with that.
big.jpg
Having said that, it will still be of assistance, for you confirm what days you intend to come and whether you will be bringing kit or not. Places will be subject to the usual charge of £15 per head (although I am not planning on taking any money until much closer to the time).

f you wish to stay at the hotel, you can book direct through the hotel website: https://www.oldenglishinns.co.uk/our-lo ... blackwater or you can phone them on 0845 608 6040. I am told that the price of a room is £150 for the two nights. I am also told that the price is likely to go up closer to the time.

The food and drink seems to be good there, so I suspect the plan will be to eat at the hotel. Indeed, I would encourage people to make as much use of the bar as possible. We have been offered a very good rate on the expectation that people will do this.

As usual, here is the standard information about the meetups.

Acorn & BBC Micro User Group (ABug) meetups are open to enthusiasts of the BBC Micro, Acorn Electron, Atom and Archimedes/RISC OS machines. Attendees will typically stay for two if not all three days. The meets are always very informal and can involve:
  • members bringing their own hardware to set up and show off**
  • time spent working on hardware and programming/games projects
  • exchange of ideas/knowledge
  • upgrade and repair of poorly Acorn machines
  • collaborative work on community projects, such as software preservation, preparation/planning for displays at other events etc.
  • sale of items by members (not guaranteed, but there are often opportunities to buy bits)
  • general socialising, food/drink and the odd hi-score competition!

** = Important! Ensure that any hardware you bring that features the RIFA/Paper-type capacitors with a tendency to go POP (e.g. Beebs) have had the caps changed! We can't risk setting any smoke alarms off as that may incur charges!

Please post in this thread or send me a PM to let me know if you want to come and what days you are likely to attend.

Can you tentatively put me down for friday to sunday.

However as this was the same weekend as the Dragon meetup last year, and I know they are planning another I will confirm once I know if / when that meetup is. I will of course suggest when they plan dates not to choose this weekend.

Cheers.

Hi Robert

Please put me down as a provisional attendee for the full weekend (Friday to Sunday) - full table. I'll confirm later once I know for certain about my calendar for next year.

I won't attend but maybe we can arrange our TechSat on the 2nd of June and set up a large video conference for an hour or two. I can bring a laptop and beamer and if you have such a set-up at your site we can expand our meetings across the North Sea 8)

That would be really cool. Hopefully someone will bring a projector to our meet-up so we can use the big screen.

I do sound one word of caution. I only got 8.61Mbps download and a very poor 0.90Mbps upload on the WiFi at the hotel. My 4G is usually very fast. However, there was no signal (at least for EE) there. Hopefully we will get a good enough stream on the day.

Hi,

You've got me down twice (z0m8ied0g on stardot) and (Stephen James Barriball on facebook).
Although it would be handy to be able to clone myself at times i'm not sure the technology or the world are ready for that :D

Cheers

Just a quick note to say the room price has increased a little bit - it's now £160 for a double or twin room with breakfast for two nights.

I've just booked mine....

Anyone else want to sign up for this? It looks an excellent venue.

Hi Robert, I'd finally got round to booking the hotel up to stay, just double checked with the mrs.... I've been double booked. Apprently i'll be in Corsica
with a heavy heart i'm going to have to withdraw...
I'm really gutted..

**Heads Up though**, I was about to book the room on oldenglishinns.co.uk and have found a discount code

If you enter Sum18Stay in the promotional code box it brings it down to £58 per night with breakfast and wifi, saves about £60 for the two nights

I'm already on the list, but will definitely be attending for all 3 days. I'd also like a full table.

Think I may have talked Mrs H into taking a caravan holiday just at the right time. So I may be attending - however, just as a visitor, for a change - all tree days, of course :D

Okay go on then, I would like to do 2 days but I expect I can only do one. Put me down for Saturday.

Not sure what I would do with a table. I Could bring some raspberry pi, not sure why, but I have loads of them (12 I think we 2 or 3 more about to be ordered). I could Demo Jenkins building Docker Emulator containers and firing them up on a pi Docker cluster swarm maybe, if that was of interest to anyone.

BigEd might be interested in the L-Star Plus, I could bring that. I got it sort of booting as an Atom and got distracted. Not sure I will get time between now and June to revive my other distracted project of Master Telnet.

It's an ideal opportunity to get a full day (or two) to work on it!
