I have a folder of titles that almost work... So, I will try them again with Psolver 2 pre-loaded.

Also, there are more archives to trawl through.. I'm guessing they will mostly repeat what I've posted already #-o

Its been a while...

Magnetic scrolls games :

Corruption
Fish!
Myth
Guild of Thieves
The Pawn
Jinxter
Wonderland

These are ports of the C64 versions.

They need PSolver2 - PS3.exe to be running.
I find Its best to pull all the files into one folder and then run each game by invoking the Interpreter in text only mode ( -d1 )
eg magnetic -d1 fish

Thank you for uploading these. That's me now able to run Zork on my beeb using both CP/M and DOS via PiTubeDirect. I've copied the Zork games over to my DOS DRIVE-C and now able to run from the HDD :).

I downloaded all these a while back (with Down them All when it used to work) with the intention of installing them all on a DOS Plus hard drive partition, although I never figured out exactly how I would do it.

Coincidentally last night I wrote a little script to extract all the files from the image files, after I'd unzipped all the archives and moved all the .img files to their own directory. It worked quite well:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/bash
# Extract all files from DOS disc images to a separate directory
# Images in Images dir; extracts go to Extract dir

mkdir Extract
mkdir disc
cd Images
for i in *.img ; do
j="${i%.*}" ;
echo Extracting $i to $j ;
sudo mount -o loop -t vfat "$i" ../disc ;
cp -R ../disc ../Extract/"$j" ;
sudo umount ../disc ;

done
rmdir ../disc
So now I've got a logical copy of all the files. I haven't worked out the next step yet, it will possibly involve transferring using Econet and the putfile DOS Plus utility, although I don't know yet if that's even possible. Many of them have more than 47 files, or 77 files, and some even 255 files, in a directory so that will be a challenge.

Another idea I had was to mount the DRIVE_C file as loop device and add them that way.

However there's 40MB of software there, so it won't all fit on a maximum Master 512 partition.

Currently I just mount the images using IMdrive and shift files about to create 720k test images for use with GOTEK :D

Heres a new one : David Ahl's Basic Computer Adventures (1986)

The batch files dont work.
Both BasicA and GWBasic work.
(GWBasic requires a re-boot between uses since it it locks up with an error code - cannot SHELL to BASIC )

How is everyone making *.HFE images of these *.IMG files for use with PiTube and a Gotek?

I am having a bit of trouble doing this. I have tried using the HxE utility, loading up the IMG file and then
exporting an HFE.

What I get on the Acorn / DR-DOS is a disk image with unnamed folders and no content.

Obviously I am doing something wrong.

Ok, it looks like the "Mind Shaddow" image is corrupt. I assumed if "Mind Shaddow" isn't working then everything is also not working. I just made an *.HFE of "Super Huey" and that works perfectly.

The HxE Floppy Emulator utility will process *.IMG floppy images into *.HFE files that can be used on the Gotek under DR-DOS.

I am using a Model-B with a Pi3 on the Tube doing 802086. Its just fantastic.

After playing a few games I want to get Borland Turbo-C v1.5 running on this machine.

I use the images with GOTEK and flash floppy.
Along with a physical BeebSCSI ( should also work wth BeebPISCSI emulator )

Hmmm.... I need to update and say I am not convinced "Mind Shaddow" as posted here really is corrupt.

I have made a few floppy images from scratch and they are all rubbish.

So, I am doing something wrong with the HxC disk images.

I was building 800kb, 12 bit FAT, 80 track floppies. This is not working.
Converting a floppy image someone else made does (mostly) work.

Will have to keep tinkering with it.

You should just be able to use the .img files straight out of the box without converting them. So long as they're 720kb or 360kb .img files it should be OK?

Yep all 720kb disk images created with either virtual floppy drive or IMdrive ready to use with flash floppy.
I think they may also work with a vanilla gotek but I dont have one at the moment.

And... uh... wut???? I don't have to convert *.img files?

Geez, I wonder what else I am getting wrong? Indeed , the IMG loads up
perfectly on my Model-B. Trying out "Mind Shaddow" now and its great.

Hopefully I can post something here shortly once I figure out how to
create a floppy image with "sillyfun.exe", etc. on it.

:D

The last thing, just use the HxC software to create a new image dos image and it lets you drag files into it. It's one of the options on the main menu. Or use WinImage.

Bit of an explanation about what's going on... IMG files are straight sector formats, you need to "know" what the sector layout is to be able to use them. FlashFloppy makes some assumptions based on size, and it knows that 360/720k IMGs are most likely to be IBM PC format, so serves the sectors up to the floppy interface accordingly.

HFE is a representation of the fluxes on the disk - the really "low level stuff". The floppy emulator doesn't care about the disk size or format or anything when it's dealing with HFE, it just serves up the low level stuff as described in the file. Whether it makes sense or not is up to the creator of the file. This is useful for converting actual floppies, using something like GreaseWeazle, into image files that can be used on the floppy emulator when you *don't* have a suitable sector format, or there are disk protections etc, etc.

DOS+ on the 186 coprocessor can deal with quite a few formats - it has a funny 640k format that it uses to boot (you might be able to get away with that as an ADF format disk, I can't remember - it's essentially ADFS), and then a native 800k format (very similar to archimedes ADFS, but the sector numbering is different). The latter needs to be converted to HFE as I recall as FlashFloppy doesn't have a native representation of it, although you can "describe" the format and use sector images (see the flashfloppy wiki for how).

DOS+ can also just read normal IBM format disks - 360/720k is fine. Hence, you can just get away with using the IMG files of these and not worry about converting anything :)

Thanks for these and all the work involved. I have downloaded them with the intention of eventually adding them to the Master 512 section of 8BS as I check them out. Initially I have found that simply renaming the extension from .img to .dos enables the images to be loaded and run in Beebem 4.16 although I haven't tried out many so far. By the way, I use .img to denote ADFS 800k discs on the 8BS website

All of these images are now in the Master 512 section of the 8BS download catalogue. I have checked them all out, occasionally added stuff to the info and added documentation and walkthroughs where I could find them. I have also separated out the files from the images into their own folder within each zip. Just in case. http://8bs.com/catalogue.htm

Is anybody able to explain the “psolver” mechanism please? It seems some software needs this (somehow in combination with the shift lock key?), but I’ve been unable to work out what it means.
