ABUG EAST MIDLANDS (Winter Warmer) 17-19 November 2017 (Leicestershire) BOOKING THREAD

Post by sixxdog_uk »

SOLD OUT

If you haven't paid already can you send payment as PayPal gift to alex_wilson2@me.com in the notes please state your name (also stardot name) and days that you'll be attending , ALSO if I haven't updated the list below , or if it's wrong in some way , please PM me.

PLEASE check I've got all your details correct and the days you intend to attend.
Especially check that if you've paid already I've marked you as such. :)

PLEASE NOTE : Anyone unpaid or who has not arranged alternative payment methods, by Mid OCT , will get a stern reminder , then sadly their slot will be offered to the next on the waiting list. (NOT that i expect this to happen). :)

Hi everyone

With the brilliant response to January’s event why not finish off the year as we started off.
This time we have two rooms!! :)

20 places in the main room and 8 in the second overflow room.

I’ve allocated the places as first come first served , with the final 8 places being in Room 2 , which will be where the cool kids hang out.

The meet will take place from Friday 17th - Sunday 19th November 2017 in the Meeting Rooms at the Fieldhead Hotel, Markfield Lane, Markfield, Leicestershire LE67 9PS.

Image

It is a country hotel with bar, restaurant and free parking - so hopefully we'll be able to replicate the atmosphere and setup that worked so well in Halifax. The venue is a short distance from J22 of the M1 and is about 7-8 miles north-west of Leicester city centre. If anybody is planning to travel by rail to the city centre, I'm sure we can arrange a pickup or two (please leave a message in the thread).

The rooms will be available at the following times:
Friday 17th: 4pm - Midnight
Saturday 18th: 7am - Midnight
Sunday 19th: 7am - 10pm (not that I expect anybody to stay that late!)

Costs: 29 places are available and an advance contribution of £15 is requested from each attending member, payable preferably by Paypal 'Friends and Family' (which won't incur fees). Each attendee can expect to be allocated half-a-table (or equivalent space) to set up their Acorn gear and/or laptops etc.

The rooms are costing £250 to hire - if all 28 places are taken, that will result in a surplus of £170, of which £50 will be used to buy drinks and snacks. I'll also bring a kettle and teabags/coffee (please bring a mug!). The remaining £120 will be put into the ABUG pot to purchase items required for future meetings - Dave M will have more details of this.

If you wish to stay at the hotel, the prices I've been quoted are £55 for the Friday night, £75 for the Saturday night or £125 for both nights. Rooms can be booked direct with the hotel on 01530 245454. PLEASE CHECK WITH THE HOTEL as prices may have changed since I last enquired.

Last time we had all of our meals at the hotel , which worked out well , so unless anyone has any desire to try something new , why change :)

Finally, the Retro Computer Museum is nearby in Leicester and is open on Sundays (until 5pm) so we could also opt to pay a visit there in the afternoon. It's likely we'll make a decision on the Saturday, but feel free to post your thoughts in this thread.

Image

Ok, that's the specifics out of the way - here's the standard blurb for those not already familiar with the ABug events:

Acorn & BBC Micro User Group (ABug) meetups are open to enthusiasts of the BBC Micro, Acorn Electron, Atom and Archimedes/RISC OS machines. Attendees will typically stay for two if not all three days. The meets are always very informal and can involve:
  • members bringing their own hardware to set up and show off**
  • time spent working on hardware and programming/games projects
  • exchange of ideas/knowledge
  • upgrade and repair of poorly Acorn machines
  • collaborative work on community projects, such as software preservation, preparation/planning for displays at other events etc.
  • sale of items by members (not guaranteed, but there are often opportunities to buy bits)
  • general socialising, food/drink and the odd hi-score competition!

** = Important! Ensure that any hardware you bring that features the RIFA/Paper-type capacitors with a tendency to go POP (e.g. Beebs) have had the caps changed! We can't risk setting any smoke alarms off as that may incur charges!

Please post in this thread to reserve your place then send me a PM to confirm payment information and to have your name added to the list (29 places available). NOW SOLD OUT <<<<<<

Hopefully this will build on the success we had in January , many thanks guys , as it's you guys that make the event.

Thanks
Alex

IF anyone on the lists below can no longer attend please let me know ASAP so I can move someone up from the waiting list.
I have marked everyone as attending ALL weekend , please let me know if that is not the case and I can edit the list.

IF anyone in Room2 really doesn't want to be there and you can find someone in the Main Room to swap please let me know.
Likewise if anyone who is in Room2 no longer wants to attend please let me know.

I have made the lists in the order I was contacted from the original thread on stardot , which turned into an ad-hoc booking thread.
If anyone from the Main Room cancels , I will move the first person on the Room 2 list into the main room.

Hope this all makes sense , it did when I typed it.

At the moment, I am planning to arrive on Thursday evening. So,I should be able to help set up on Friday as soon as the rooms are available.
There is so much wonder in the universe; why should you want to imagine that there is more?

Hi.

Confirming I'll come on the Sunday, but I'll probably be with no kit - unless anyone wants anything in particular.

Thanks, Mark.

My attempt to claim a space was obviously too subtle - viewtopic.php?f=26&t=12728&start=30#p176677

Any chance you can fit me in?

Hmmm, I'm pretty sure I said I'd be able to pop along on the Saturday at some point, not the whole weekend as I only live down the road...

EDIT: I doubt I'll be bringing any kit unless it's small and fits in my bag. Getting around on crutches means I can't easily move my kit around any more :(

Talking of lifts, if there's a non-smoker in the Sheffield area who needs a lift I can do so. I'm going down early on Friday and returning late Sunday.

I haven't paid yet, but am happy to swap.

I may not make Friday evening, but if I don't, I'll try and get their Saturday mid-morning.

Confirmed my attendance with GBPs, thanks. :D

Does anyone want me to bring my Econet in a box? It can host 6 stations without extensions.

Yes please! It will save me dismantling my network to bring my junction boxes with me.

My marriage? (Try repairing that!) lol
But I think the key to that is in me not buying any more 'Junk' ;)

Dave H :D
Thanks very much. I'm fine with driving as I've now got an auto and a 3 year medical licence from the DVLA so getting there is no problem.

In terms of stuff to bring, at the moment, of it can fit in a rucksack then I can carry it. I'm not sure my rework station will fit in the bag but if it does, I'd like to try to build some VIDC enhancers on the day. Lord knows, I'm long overdue getting them built now.

I just have to locate all the parts... After 2 and a bit years of having everything in really useful boxes being moved from place to place in the house whilst each room gets sorted after the house was converted for accessibility for me, they could be anywhere the process is finally coming to an end and we have one bedroom, the landing and hall and the lounge to redecorate... I know where the boards are, I think I know where the oscillators are, it's the stash of 140 new ACT153's and passives that seem to be MIA.

I know the feeling! After my storage phase, while the Garage was converted into my lovely new workshop, and Mrs H being so kind as to 'tidy-up' for me  I'm only just finding where thing are - lots still missing, though :?

Offer still there - we can, at least, unpack your car. So you could make it 'big' bag :D

And if Dave can't fit it into his car I am sure I can manage in mine. I am actually commuting each day as I'm only 45 mins away if the M1 is clear. So you could bring a mass of stuff!

My problem is that I have everything in my 'man cave' and can't remember where I put it. :(
