Colour Art Utility Disc - Watford Electronics (1984)

Post by Pernod »

Thought I'd dumped this before but couldn't find it. This is the Colour Art Utility Disc by Watford Electronics (1984), for use with AMX Mouse.

Always nice to hear from authors that find themselves here by searching for their software. Is there a story behind it, did you write anything else?

Not much of a story really. I got into programming via the BBC Micro very early on (changed my career from aeronautics to software engineering, or "programming" as it was called back then :) and have been happily doing that my whole life since). When I got the AMX mouse I quickly spotted a need to be able to colour in its images. As I recall it used an interesting method of chequerboarding with a mix of the available colours to produce what the eye perceived as a wide palette of subtle new shades. The only other software I wrote commercially (as far as I can remember) was a disc formatter for Watford Electronics (which came on a disc full of various other utilities). The funny thing about that was, they wanted something very visual (that showed the disc sectors slowly being filled in). The software spent about 80% of its time drawing the pretty picture of the disc and 20% actually doing the formatting (which was an already slow process). :D

Are there any AMX clipart discs with pictures my grandkids can colour in on my master?

Maybe a little late, but the 'EXTRA! STOP PRESS UTILITIES' has a lot of clip art images that can be used, not mode 1 though, but pagemaker. But the images can be converted to mode1. That can be found on te AMX Art utils disc. (http://mybbcmaster.nl/other_amx_mouse.html
In the past I had made some images for my son to play with. Want to have these?

Hi Dave,

Was a bit of search for the originals. Most of the pictures where coloured already by my son a view years back :D
They are not clippings but full screen pictures to colour and play with.
Got 2 DSD discs for you. The first is all in MODE0 (used with Wapping Editor ) and the 2nd is the MODE1 version.
Have to be careful, because some of the lines are not closed, so when filling a shop your whole screen can get that colour/pattern. So use the undo and zoom tool well :)

Have fun with it.

Cheers
