Anyone know what this book was called?

Post by The Doctor »

Hi,

I remember reading a book at school (some 14-15 years ago!) but can't
remember the title of it.
I'm fairly sure it was aimed at the Acorn Electron (rather than BBC) and
it contained BASIC game listings.
I seem to recall it was split into various parts, ie: Arcade, Puzzle,
Adventure etc..

The Adventure section (I think!) consisted of just one game that was
built up in stages throughout the chapter.
The code was very 'spread out' with lots of REM statements to explain
what each section did.

Thats probably a tad vague, but does it ring any bells with anyone?
Cheers!
Possible books

Hi Doc, aint been here 4 a while so I didn't see your posting. Regarding the book, 2 possible titles spring to mind-both of which are likely to NOT be the ones your after LOL<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin"> .
Anyway, they are both listing books for all computer formats-not just the Electron.
They are;-
(1)Write your own Fantasy Games for your microcomputer-Les Howarth and Cheryl Evans
(2)Weird computer games-Jenny Tyler and Chris Oxlade

The first is concerned with creating a single game- it lets you plan out the characters ,settings etc ,and there are plenty of explanations abouts what the different codes do.
The second book has listings for 6 different games-the first 5 are smaller games, with there being listings for a much bigger adventure game at the back of the book. The games are- Tower of Terror,Skulls of the pyramid,Monster Wrestling,Jaws, Flying witches and the 'biggie'- Micropuzzle
This second book was a book specially produced for schools( I think) and is dated 1984- aah the memories.

Let me know if either ring a bell and I will perhaps send you a scan of them- I could scan all of the second book as it is pretty thin! More possibilities

Have you tried looking through the following list?

8bs.com/s ...

Alternatively, your description of REM statements matches the description given in this review:

<a href="http://www.geocities.com/electron_user_ ...

However, the format of the book sounds familiar and I thought it might have been mentioned in the Inform Designer's Manual by Graham Nelson, but I can't find a reference. It sounds like a <number> Games for the
<machine name> type of book, like one of these "hard to find" titles:

(I've tried to post this twice now. Third time lucky)

Thanks for replying guys.
Unfortunately none of these has lead to the book I'm after.
One of Davids links (8bs.com) lead me to another book I've been looking for (The WHICH? Software guide) though, so thanks for that one.
Cheers!

Usbourne

The book you described sounds like it was in the same style as many of the Usbourne books, so perhaps using Google to search along those lines might yield results.
