Hello Grumps,
I've split out your post and the following conversion into its own topic.
It's now here: How to use/convert Atom Software Archive files so that they can be loaded via the cassette port.

Re: Atom Software Archive
Hi,
This is such a longshot but I have to try.
Looking through the Atom Archive there are two glaring omissions. Well, only glaring if you know the titles existed in the first place.
There are two games, COLUMN INVADERS and RICOCHET that were distributed by A&F.
I'm 99.9999% sure nobody ever bought these so that likely is the reason they're not in the archive.
But if anyone has a copy, or ever heard of them, that'd be great.
It's a bit of a J R Hartley moment (if you recall the Yellow Pages advert in the UK).

I have never seen these games but I did find an article in Acorn User where Ricochet is mentioned ...

Re: Atom Software Archive
If I can find my Program Power Toolkit ROM, then I can CAT my old cassettes and see if I've got copies. I always used 1200 baud to save stuff, but the standard Atom won't support that.oss003 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 23, 2024 7:51 pmNext step is finding the games .......hoglet wrote: ↑Sat Mar 23, 2024 7:49 pmI found they are both mentioned in the Novermber 1983 issue of Acorn User in an A&F Software ad:

Re: Atom Software Archive
PCharme and Josbox also have 1200 baud routines.
You can always upload a WAV file.
Hoglet has software to decode the WAV file into code.

Re: Atom Software Archive
I would start just by posting some photos of your old tapes/boxes, to see if we can spot anything that might be MIA (Missing In Acion).
Then you can prioritise making a high quality WAV copy of anything that looks interesting.
As Kees says, we have some very good recover software that works directly from WAV files.
BTW, it's been a very long time since any MIA commercial titles were unearthed (the last being October 2019, Aardvark Invaders). A tape copy of Aardvark Hedgehog is known to exist with the author (Nick Pelling), but he hasn't yet made this available to the archive.
Dave
Re: Atom Software Archive
Hoglet, I looked through the archive spreadsheet and ALL (20) of my commercial tapes/titles are already listed. 12 of them load without fault into the old girl.
I have 5 other tapes that have a mixture of code that I wrote some 40 years ago. Some can be read at 300 baud. It'd be great if some of the 1200 baud stuff is the missing games I'm searching for.
Is there any recover software that can decode direct from line-in of PC? Or what code is there that can interpret a wav file?
Thanks.

Re: Atom Software Archive
The code is checked in to the achive github:
https://github.com/hoglet67/AtomSoftwar ... omwavtoatm
It's written in Java, so you need a JDE and ANT installed to compile/run it.
Once compiled, to run it, you would do:
Code: Select all
java -jar atomwavtoatm.jar [ options ] <directory> <wav file>
where options are:
- b <baud rate> ; baud rate (defaults to 300)
- d ; debug flag
- z ; use bit mode rather than byte mode
It works will at 300 baud, and is not well tested at 1200 baud.
If you post a WAV file I quickly can try it for you.

Re: Atom Software Archive
Isn't it time for an update of the Archive? There are several newer games released and the AGD carousel might also be updated. The latest "official" release is dated November 2011 and the latest V12.4 pre release is also a year old. Just asking ...

I might need help with the Personal Computer World and Personal Computing Today type-ins!

Re: Atom Software Archive
Atom Chain Loader are a few programs but I don't think worth saving.
Here are Double Speed Saver and Gas/Electric Estimator.
I changed the last one to run because the program listing was not for the Acorn Atom.
The screen output is a mess and I don't know if the results are right ...... so needs some checking.

Re: Atom Software Archive
I'll add these shortly.
FYI, I've done most of the PCW titles:
https://github.com/hoglet67/AtomSoftwar ... azines/PCW
Just Footprints remains....
I've added these into github in plain text format so we can easily make corrections. When the archive is built, these will be changed to ATM/Basic files.
