looking for smd resistor component

Post by Iggypop »

Can anybody guess the type of SMD in the picture.. Are both zero ohms registers?
I broke an 8TB haddisk by connecting a wrong modular sata cable.

I hope i can repair the pcb by replacing two 000 resistors.

any advice on solder and flux i should use ?

Without something definite to give a sense of scale it is hard to be certain. The pins of the IC look like those of a SOIC device with 0.05" lead pitch. On that basis the resistors appear to be 0603 parts. I'm not sure about the device with a square on it. It seems to be in parallel with a 0 ohm part. It should also be easy to check for 0 ohms - if it's still acting as a short circuit then I don't think changing it will fix the problem.

Thx for your repley. I ordered 0603 0 ohm resistors. i hope that wil fix it.

It worked !!! I used my camera as a microscope. I enabled the function magnify when zooming and set it the time to magnify to endless.
it wasn't pretty but the endresult was functional. The zero omhs resistors function as fuses. These ristors were connected to the 5 v input. The incompatible sata cable probably had 12V on the 5v input

so never use cables for a modular PSU that did not originaly came with that PSU. Lessons learned the hard way.

Just to point something out... a zero ohm resistor is other wise known as 'wire'. You don't need to order anything, just replace the 0ohm resistor with a short bit of wire

Yes, but at what current would the wire act as a fuse?...

given that a 0603 SMD can handle best part of 2amp, and a piece of 28awg wire can handle 1.25A or two strands of 30awg kynar would carry 1.6A

yes it would act as a fuse :)

This table says that the fusing current for 28AWG size copper wire is 14.5A

Even if this data source is not entirely accurate, the fusing current is considerably higher than the maximum rated current carrying capacity, which appears to be what you have stated.
