The well known Bad Apple demo on the Acorn Electron
The well known Bad Apple demo on the Acorn Electron
This has been my project for a while now. I proudly present version 0.1 of my Bad Apple demo for the Acorn Electron. With a proper intro and outro. And some proper music by Simon M (original BBC tune by Inverse Phase).

Amazing work! Love the high-res scanline look.

Re: The well known Bad Apple demo on the Acorn Electron
That looks incredible! Presumably it streams from disc .. but does it need a fast MMC disc?
Re: The well known Bad Apple demo on the Acorn Electron
Thank you! Yes, it streams from floppy disk. Two double sided disks to be exact. Which translates to 4 single sided disks on MMFS (SD-card). I can't test on real floppy disks at the moment. And it seems MMFS is actually slightly slower than DFS. I am using the ElkSD64 by Ramtop.

Re: The well known Bad Apple demo on the Acorn Electron
Something tells me that a Gotek might not be fast enough. That said, I think Bad Apple works on the Master using my Gotek.
Re: The well known Bad Apple demo on the Acorn Electron
4 to 5 KB/s should be fast enough. And this is the (max) speed I measure on DFS and MMFS. I don't know anything about Gotek. I would like to test on some more configurations and also experiment with (more) data compression to maybe get it all down to one double sided floppy disk.

My goodness, who'd have thought that the Elk could run Bad Apple - splendid work, sir!

Colour me seriously impressed. I've seen less done with more capable hardware and still thought that was good, but this is mind-blowing!

Re: The well known Bad Apple demo on the Acorn Electron
If it'd fit into 640kb then a single ADFS disc should suffice? Should run off the gotek with a higher data rate than FM too...

Re: The well known Bad Apple demo on the Acorn Electron
Without any actual Electron disk images, this could simply have been done on a PC.
Re: The well known Bad Apple demo on the Acorn Electron
You're right. It could have been.
By the way, did you just join stardot to post this?

Re: The well known Bad Apple demo on the Acorn Electron
There are always people who’ll look at retro demo videos on YouTube and post comments questioning whether it was really done on original / unexpanded hardware. (Sigh)...

Which could arguably be seen as the greatest compliment possibleVectorEyes wrote: ↑Mon Feb 08, 2021 12:00 pm There are always people who’ll look at retro demo videos on YouTube and post comments questioning whether it was really done on original / unexpanded hardware. (Sigh)...

Re: The well known Bad Apple demo on the Acorn Electron
Wow!
I found this after seeing the BBC version - that was impressive, but this is amazing!
I’ve got a dumb idea about getting all my old machines running Bad Apple - preferably at once, if I can rustle up enough displays.
Is there any chance of the code or binary being released? Not a problem if not (no explanation needed), but I hope there’s no harm in asking.
Thanks!

Interesting how it confuses the video compression algorithm on Youtube.

Re: The well known Bad Apple demo on the Acorn Electron
Thank you! And I'm sorry, nothing about my Bad Apple demo has been officially released. I really should clean it up, test it some more and release the binary at least. Not sure when I ever feel like doing that thoughdisplaced wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 8:55 pm Wow!

Re: The well known Bad Apple demo on the Acorn Electron
Personally, I'd really love to see an official release of this.
