Repton 2 [pre-release]

Post by Rhys »

I've been playing old Beeb games on the BBC Micro games archive, and I came across a pre-release Repton 2 :o

https://bbcmicro.co.uk/jsbeeb/play.php? ... ssd&noseek

So I checked it out, to see if it was completable (which I think it is but ... grr meteors!)

Anyone done anything on this?

I'll post some comments on it, as they occur to me, but for starters ...

The colours are different (the opening level is red, while the red level is blue - the other blue levels are also blue, the pink levels are red, the cyan levels are pink, and the levels where Repton's head is cyan have a cyan background, but Repton's head is green.

There are pre-game instructions, which give the famous "Five Labours of Repton" we know and love:
1634 Diamonds
4744 Earth Sections
64 Transporters
18 Monsters
42 Puzzle-pieces (mentioned separately)
but in the actual game the totals are different (1652 Diamonds, 4805 Earth) and, correspondingly, a couple of the levels are a little different.

The instructions give the final messages as "REPTON 2 IS ENDED", but the actual message assembled reads: REPTON IS COMPLETE (with the IS where you expect the 2 to be) and there's a weird little asterisk in the N.

I worked out that the totals are all achievable (unlike the original Repton 2 release!) unfortunately I didn't manage to complete the game - so I don't know if that works (grr, got killed in the last meteor dash across level 1 ... I swear the meteors are even harder in this version)

As for a breakdown of level differences, I think it's only 5 levels that are affected.

Level "B" (the only one that's red in the Release) has quite a few differences, including one that makes the two stacked eggs harder to deal with.
Level "C" (the one accessed from the bottom left of Level "A") has some minor differences that don't affect the gameplay
Level "E" (the one with those four transporters leading to it) has a lot more diamonds and earth in places that are empty in the released version.
Level "G" (the toughest level - I call it the Torture Chamber) you start in a different place, and the "missing diamond" is missing in this version too
(but because the totals are different in this version it doesn't matter)
Level "H" (The Arena with the two hatching monsters) after collecting the puzzle piece, you can actually go down and collect some earth sections "twice"

Those are the main differences I can remember ...
Oh, and you know the way that the individual levels would reset (with all diamonds, rocks, earth, etc. back in place) when you revisit them? In this version, that happens every time you use a transporter!

It's not that much harder to complete - other than the fact that you don't have the option to use saved-states, so you need the same unlimited time, endless patience, and ability to predict completely random meteors we all needed for the released version!

Has anyone else encountered this game?

As far as I am aware, the pre-release is uncompleteable, due to a missing diamond (screen G, if memory serves). There was another release, before the final release, which also had the missing diamond.

I can't remember if I put theses screens onto The Repton Resource Page, or just created them locally - probably the latter. But, yes, I have certainly encountered this version.

Hi,
Those instructions were ported over by me some time back. Sorry, I didn't notice the different values and the message. However, I have now amended them and sent them to Lee.

Thanks for spotting.

Well, I just completed it last night, so I think we must be talking about a different version here.

The level G you displayed there was missing the diamond in question, but there were other differences.
Just for starters in this version, the level is pink, and Repton starts in a different (and harder) place.

As I said, the missing diamond doesn't matter in this version, because the totals are different. As you know, in completing Repton 2 the actual goal is to reduce the score for each of the categories (including diamonds) to zero.

I'm figuring that when Tyler re-edited the levels for the version that got released, he changed the totals to what they currently are, but miscalculated in the case of the diamonds - which is why an extra diamond had to be added to Level G as in the lower of your two maps.

I can post some more pictures to show some of the other differences if anyone is interested.
(They won't be full maps though - the pixels in this online emulator are fuzzy - or soft-edged or whatever you call them - so cobbling together maps from CTRL-Print screen is even more of a pain than it already is ...)

I'll leave you with some screen grabs of the final stages of the game (the completion screen is particularly hillarious :D )

By the skin of my teeth - only the second (or third) time I've ever completed Repton 2 without saved-states!!

Well done for completing it - I never have done...properly. I fudged the PC Repton 2 scenario file so it was (almost) identical to the original then completed that, but that is the closest I've ever got.

For the screen differences, you can fire up my Repton Map Display, or Repton Map Creator (which is just version 2 of Repton Map Display) and load in the disc images to see the levels. OK, it doesn't show you Repton's initial positions on each level (for Repton 2), but it will show you all other levels, as they are stored. Both applications are available on the Repton Resource Page website.

I would post the level images here, but I haven't written version 2 far enough along to export them and version 1 only runs on Windows, which I no longer have...only macOS Ventura (version 2 is multi-platform and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux).

I have encountered this version of Repton 2 before. I posted about it here: https://www.stardot.org.uk/forums/viewt ... 524#p28524
