Wanting to get Football Manager working

Post by msknight »

I'm going through a bit of a rough time, so my brain isn't functioning as it should. Long story.

Anyway, I've wanted to return to Football Manager but I want to run it under emulation on my Ubuntu system (I had to go to the latest kernel for reasons...) but obviously JSBeeb doesn't save to disk image (although I've read about saving to Google drive but it seems to be unreliable and needs a bit of URL hackery) and I'm having problems with B-Em. I think I've got Allegro installed but I seem to have hit a problem with a path, so it won't compile.

If I recall Football Manager is sensitive to how much memory is available, to the point where I think last time I tried on hardware, the floppy disk got in the way and it crashed. Hence wanting to use emulation rather than hardware on this.

I was wondering what people's advice is on this please. As I said, my brain's a bit mushy at the moment, so I may not be grasping things fully.

Grateful for any advice.

OK - got it compiled and working... but just can't save.

F5 and saving to file, drive sound is heard, but then trying to "Do you want a new game" and answering no, and giving the name, results in returning to "Do you want a new game" so it's either not saved or isn't loading.

OK - it couldn't handle "Michelle" but a file called Mich seems to have worked. Looks like it couldn't handle as many letters as it invites the user to give.

Yeah, BITD I cheated and used an E00 DFS for this 'cos it needed too much memory.

Designed for tape (10 chars) rather than DFS (1.7 chars) ?

We have got used to the idea that the OS determines the features of the filing system and that, regardless of the actual media, they remain the same, with the 8.3 format from CP/M persisting through MS-DOS into Windows for a long time. But on the BBC Micro it was definitely down to individual filing systems and, while DFS was reasonably common, we should avoid getting lulled into an idea that it was the one true filing system.

I would say it is a good thing if programs don't make assumptions about what names a filing system can handle when the input comes from the user. What is not good is for there to be an error and for it not to be reported so you have no idea what went wrong.

Thanks all. Apologies for delay in response as I ended up at hospital today. Part of the long story.

The one thing I can say about FM is that on saving is does specifically reference disk and not tape. I do remember that some games used the extra characters as the extension, but as mentioned, not all dfs were the same. Who knows. At least I now have the problem sorted and I am glad to report have made it to division three. So... progress ;-)

Many thanks.
