Philosopher's Quest Box Art question

Post by fuzzel »

I've just been doing my regular browse through the Ebay ads and noticed a variant on the common box art for PQ.
Below is the common one with instructions and tape and below that is the one I've discovered. Notice that the tape is also a different colour.
Was there genuinely a different cover originally with fewer colours? Maybe Philospher's Quest was the first adventure they released and when Castle of Riddles and Countdown to Doom were released they added more colours to the box art and decided to change the PQ one as well. Or maybe someone's photographed it with a blue filter or left it out in the sun for too long. Anyone know anything about this?

The top two photographs go together as do the bottom two.

The Stairway To hell site doesn't have any covers with that style and it doesn't have the Electron cover either. Theres another site that says there are 2 BBC versions from Acornsoft and one from Topologika.

I suspect that you're lucky enough to possess a very early version from the first print run - where they must have originally used artwork with a very limited colour palette (it doesn't look sun damaged to me at all).

Do you have access to a scanner? It would be great to get a 600dpi scan archived.

As per above, I think this was an early print run.
I have several copies but they're all the 'standard' colour version
Source - my dad wrote the game:)
