POTENTIAL ABUG NORTH MEET UP
POTENTIAL ABUG NORTH MEET UP
Hi all Northern Acorn fans !
I've been able to get an agreement in principle for an awesome venue for an ABUG NORTH meet.
The North West Computer Museum in Leigh, WN7 2LB
The price will be £10 per day and includes full access to the museum exhibits, which if you havent been - is very hands-on and not just glass boxes.
We have the option of two rooms (see the photos), one is suitable for around 20ish people (it would be emptied for us) the other will probably take every Stardot member ! and a good number of tables will be provided
I'm thinking of a mid September event - to avoid the school holidays - so it would be good to gauge some level of interest
we would have access to the cafe that the museum has, and they serve a mixed bag of various hot and cold snacks etc
and there is a Holiday Inn hotel 2.3miles away ( 8 minutes by car)
Any comments or thoughts gratefully accepted
PS - Southerners are always welcome lol
PLEASE ENSURE YOU VOTE ON THE POLL
I wont be counting any comments here - so far only 6 people have voted , and one of them is me ! we'd need more interest shown

Re: POTENTIAL ABUG NORTH MEET UP
Sounds good.
Depends on what you mean by mid September. I’m currently good for 8th - 10th. Second preference would be for 22nd - 24th. The weekend in the middle is far more awkward for me.
But as I’m only a south-westerner…. And are about three hours, 185 miles away, its what suits all you up North (which to me is beyond Worcestershire ).

I'd be interested. Please keep me in the loop.
Re: POTENTIAL ABUG NORTH MEET UP
This is quite local to me - so yes, I'm in.
Re: POTENTIAL ABUG NORTH MEET UP
Hey Richard, fantastic news!
I'd love to come but would only be able to make it on 1st, 3rd or 5th weekends. Fingers firmly crossed for the 3rd weekend (15th/16th/17th)
Please let me know if you need any help with any of it, I'll do my best to help out where possible!
I have a couple of 6 foot folding tables I could bring too, if table availability becomes an issue.

Re: POTENTIAL ABUG NORTH MEET UP
Definitely interested, pending figuring out transport for myself and my kit!
Is anyone likely to be passing Leeds on their way - happy to split fuel costs. Nearly 3 hours by train and bus does not appeal!
Looking at my calendar I'm busy at the end of the month, 22nd to 26th give or take. Every other weekend is free.
Cheers
Phil.

Questions about software preservation (BBC, RISC OS or other platforms)? Please feel free to ask.
Currently looking for RISC OS software to archive and preserve, please drop me a PM if you have any to offer.

Re: POTENTIAL ABUG NORTH MEET UP
I'll pass by Leeds-ish, going along the M62 from Hull way, so can divert to pick you up and drop you back. I'll probably only be doing the one day though, and may need to leave a bit early, depending on things closer the time.philpem wrote: ↑Sun Jun 25, 2023 8:42 pm Definitely interested, pending figuring out transport for myself and my kit!

Re: POTENTIAL ABUG NORTH MEET UP
So yes maybe (voted maybe in the poll) Its on the correct side for me (West) and communicable as a day trip from home.
So as a one day yes maybe would be interested, having not really done any ABUG meetings before.

Definitely (mid-September onward)
Sadly, I couldn't attend the opening when Steve F was there.

Will be a bit of an adventure. One day only though. Be good to catch up with peeps.
Re: POTENTIAL ABUG NORTH MEET UP
No vote from me but only because I'm a lowly Southerner
Re: POTENTIAL ABUG NORTH MEET UP
Bit too far for me, and I don't want to vote "No" because that seems churlish. I'd be surprised if you couldn't get a full roster of 20-30 attendees, given the recent series of ABUGs not serving the North too well. I hope it happens, and I expect it to be a success.

Re: POTENTIAL ABUG NORTH MEET UP
The museum is a fantastic location and is filled to the brim with retro computer/gaming goodness. Joe, who runs the museum, is also a really nice bloke, very helpful and a huge retro computer enthusiast, as you would expect!
It would be great to hold an 'up-north' gathering again.

it really is - and its so good that so few items are behind glass too .Kevin Edwards wrote: ↑Mon Jun 26, 2023 6:41 pm The museum is a fantastic location and is filled to the brim with retro computer/gaming goodness. ever wondered what an Apple Lisa looks like from the back ? not a problem,
or never played on a dragon32 ? not a problem
and Joes knowledge is exemplary
couldn't agree more !Kevin Edwards wrote: ↑Mon Jun 26, 2023 6:41 pm It would be great to hold an 'up-north' gathering again.

Re: POTENTIAL ABUG NORTH MEET UP
Best weekend for me would be the middle one in September, ie. 15th/16th. I definitely can't do the one before.
Re: POTENTIAL ABUG NORTH MEET UP
Voted YES. I know Joe has been keen to host an ABug at the mill for several years (well before they were even open!) so good to see the wheels finally in motion, thanks for pursuing this!
I could make mid-September 15-17, not the week before.
May also be able to do either 22-24 or 29-1, but middle of the month would definitely work the best for me at least.
Btw are there plenty of plug sockets in the room? I could only see one pair of double sockets on the back wall in the photo, but there are bound to be more dotted around, right?

Re: POTENTIAL ABUG NORTH MEET UP
In the big room, there's not as many as I would like, so some long extension leads will be needed but I think we should be ok if we're careful.

Ok, I've got plenty of 10/15m coils that I can bring with me if need be. Plus lots of 4/6-ways.

Re: POTENTIAL ABUG NORTH MEET UP
Been a long while since I did a Stardot event/meetup. I'd be interested in it too. I rememeber the one we had at The Las O'Gowrie pub in Manchester. Was a brilliant day.

Re: POTENTIAL ABUG NORTH MEET UP
I wish you good luck in finding a suitable venue
An ABug North is most definitely a good idea.
