Re: High Score Challenge - S20 - R01 - Space Adventure
Forced myself to have another go , didn't find it too bad this time, found 2 of the crystals this time.
But the combat system really is annoying, but it seems once they are destroyed the androids seem to stay away which helps,
Managed to get a better score too.

Argh! I forgot to refuel the life support... I'm not sure I've got the patience to play again... My best so far: 900

Re: High Score Challenge - S20 - R01 - Space Adventure
For some reason I keep getting HTTP error when I try to post from the PC. I had one go earlier and managed to complete the game on skill level 1 with a score of 4450. I hope this posts from my phone. I had this issue ages ago and it sorted itself out after a few days. I'll try to post the photo when it resolves itself.
Re: High Score Challenge - S20 - R01 - Space Adventure
Seems like a reboot did the job. For now. Hope the issue doesn't reoccur.
Re: High Score Challenge - S20 - R01 - Space Adventure
Sounds like your PC isn't parsing something right after some time of being on, is my guess. It's not only people that get confused as they get older......

Re: High Score Challenge - S20 - R01 - Space Adventure
As I suggested this title (dives for cover) I had better damn well play it
Well, I've found a much cheaper way of igniting a pellet of tritium - put it under my space bar when playing Space Adventure
I forgot how frustrating the combat is in this game. As per usual, when I started yelling, I stopped playing There are some bugs that can be exploited, especially getting the androids to fire at you diagonally when they are behind cover, they get trapped and make for an easy kill.
As for scoring, I have no idea, but I assume you are supposed to kill everything and collect everything to get a good score, perhaps any remaining energy and power packs help in this regard?
I started on skill level 1 and got 4380, I had a quick replay on skill level 3 but amusingly the entire game was devoid of anything, making it unplayable. Unfortunately, I have more-or-less zero time at the moment, so this is my final score. It's not a terrible game by any means, the combat sucks, I guess it is more usable on joysticks, just be careful not to lose sight of the keyboard as you'll need to recharge a weapon or life support (a choice often, then the keypress, all whilst under fire) I also made a handy map for not having to remember where the keys go

Re: High Score Challenge - S20 - R01 - Space Adventure
I had a spare half hour this morning and thought I'd look into the scoring and came up with this... It appears there is a limit on the possible score on completion, that score is determined by how many robots are in the game (assuming you have visited every single room) - although looking at the scores, that doesn't seem possible, more thinking required Edit:ah, you get 2,000 for completion - thought I was having trouble with me addin' there for a min

That's actually really useful information, thanks MM......maniacminer wrote: ↑Sat Mar 18, 2023 3:56 pm I had a spare half hour this morning and thought I'd look into the scoring and came up with this... Yup it is. I often quote another Clint Eastwood character - "A man's gotta know his limitations"Venger wrote: ↑Sat Mar 18, 2023 6:25 pmWas that a deliberate "For a Few Dollars More" quote? . Re: High Score Challenge - S20 - R01 - Space Adventure
Well, I just discovered the crappiest limitation of this game. I fully expected that after completing it on skill level 1 you would repeat on skill level 2 then skill level 3 but nope, that's the end!
Otherwise, my affection for it is still ... warm-ish!

That one's a favourite of mine toomaniacminer wrote: ↑Sat Mar 18, 2023 6:53 pmI often quote another Clint Eastwood character - "A man's gotta know his limitations"
Wasn't gonna give this game another spin but saw those other scores creeping up and figured I would. Game's not huge, after all
I'd found it a bit of a bind before, as my laptop requires me to also press the FN key to use function keys - which is obviously hugely inconvenient to try to do mid-game! Made much better progress once I'd remapped things a bit
Still ended up getting carried away in combat and forgetting to recharge
Score: 1680
Has anybody else suspected that this game may have been partial inspiration for a much later, iconic Beeb arcade adventure? Dude in a spacesuit has to collect crap and return to his ship, with health and weapons that need recharging from power packs (using the function keys, no less). Am I the only one to see a strong similarity to Exile there?
Re: High Score Challenge - S20 - R01 - Space Adventure
It looks like 4520 is the maximum score. I went around again and mopped up everything on all the levels. I can now rest in the knowledge that I'll never have to play this game ever again .
Re: High Score Challenge - S20 - R01 - Space Adventure
That's like comparing a steaming dog turd to a Da Vinci masterpiece. I wasn't the greatest fan of Exile due to the fact that so many things could screw your game up due to a lot of randomness (and the damned magic mushrooms were a huge pain), but nobody can deny that it's definitely the most impressive game to have ever been written on a 32K platform. This game is just crap (and that's being kind).Cybershark wrote: ↑Sun Mar 19, 2023 2:19 pm Has anybody else suspected that this game may have been partial inspiration for a much later, iconic Beeb arcade adventure? Re: High Score Challenge - S20 - R01 - Space Adventure
Well, I didn't play Exile much but for me the greatest one was Elite......and still is but then they are also different genres so in it's genre, absolutely, Exile is the best.

Re: High Score Challenge - S20 - R01 - Space Adventure
I came across "Space Adventure" by accident, looking at Virgin software releases for the Beeb and went through and played each one for bit. To be fair, this game was released in 1983 - so I can give it some leeway
Exile is truly a tour-de-force of programming. Have an idea that couldn't possibly fit in a Beeb's miniscule memory? Now the game really starts!
The limitations of the hardware give this game its character, I played it a bit on the Beeb, but mainly played it on the Amiga A500 then A1200 (one of the last games I bought on the Amiga) it was a very clever game, I chucked my notes on that when I moved office in 2000.

Re: High Score Challenge - S20 - R01 - Space Adventure
One final game, completed it , didn't get the maximum score but I really don't want to have to play it again , and there isn't the time now, so this will probably be it for this game !
Re: High Score Challenge - S20 - R01 - Space Adventure
High Score Tables Updated for Season 20, Round 01......
The game has been trashed enough in the thread so I won't say that this is the one of the most horrible games I've played, nor will I say it's utter crap. There, glad I didn't say what I was thinking. Anyway, I won't ever have to play it again and I'm pretty sure others are thinking the same thing.
We do have 2 whiners ....... errrrr winners this time and they are legitimately Venger and Rod C with probably the best score you can achieve. Congratulations to both of you for sticking with it, it took perseverance.
On a side note I'd like to thank all those who played this round. We had 10 playing this game this round so.....Thank you!!! It seems we are mostly averaging out at 11 so this participation is a bit below average.
As usual please check to ensure I've not missed anyone's scores because it's easy to miss things on this and I really don't want to do that for anyone's hard earned score.
