Largest person sprite in a BBC B game?

Post by garfield »

Hello all,

What game has the largest person sprite? A candidate I see is Tynesoft's "Big KO" which features combatants that often exceed 46 x 72 (square ratio) pixels. Example:

bigko_hugesprite.gif (1.17 KiB) Viewed 2932 times
Any other game sprite that stand out due to their size?

It's not a person, but Boffin's tarantula is a big boy.

Citadel's Cowlmen monks always struck me as fairly large, but they're really only 10x32 with wide MODE 2 pixels.

Another not a person is the end of level boss in Jeltron, which is something like 104x64 in square pixels.

I think in terms of person sprites, nothing eclipses the size of The Big KO.

In terms of other types of sprites, I have just checked out Jeltron's boss. Impressively large!

Is the Granny's Garden witch a contender or does she not count?

I think GG is a bit tenuous. I was more considering bitmap modes where the whole sprite is movable either in X axis or Y axis or both simultaneously.

Check out these (literal) bad boys from Goldbank:
Disc054-GoldBank.png
(this is probably cheating, as this is a modified Mode 2 game with larger pixels)

I wouldn't necessarily call it cheating (the "extra wide" pixel aspect ratio). I thint Bank Panic type games have screens where the characters don't move (with their feet) per se. But rather they are like background elements where their arms move.

Phew, going to be hard to beat that.

I was going to suggest one of the other Tynesoft sports games, such as Commonwealth Games, which from memory had some extra-large scaled-up sprites. (And on the sporting theme, By Fair Means or Foul had some big sprites too. But I don't think they're larger than The Big KO.)

Barbarian II had some large monster sprites: https://youtu.be/aW1Aq53wTMo?t=55 - do they count as people though? And the helicopters in Stryker's Run must have been a lot of bytes. But I haven't counted in either case.

I guess "humanoid" is a suitable fudge term for creatures such as Barbarian 2 monsters and Podd itself!

BugEyes 2 has some pretty big sprites, e.g. the Sinclair C5 :-)

The diver in Summer Olympiad was one that occurred to me.

Yes, I thought of those when someone earlier mentioned Barbarian. These fellas were pretty chunky:

What about that big red monster on the 5th screen of Jet Power Jack (ie. The Yugg monster)?

Not sure what qualifies as a sprite… is it any picture? In which case, what about the froogs from Space maze?

May be you need to define size!
Does only moving bits count?
Does only moving a frame every now and then count?
Does pixels per byte count?

How about the Cute To Kill bosses? Very blocky and flickery, and not exactly man-on-the-street shapes, but massive regardless.

I mean that is just a static level decoration which is made up from a bunch of individual blocks.
Might as well consider this a contender

Do those guys move? I forget.

Whilst not a moving character - nor a player graphic - Peter Scott's Network has the huge Controller guy lurking in the final room. Wish I could find a pic of him!

If we can include unfinished beeb games, then I did make a start over xmas on this maze game, but wanted to finish Pitfall first

They do indeed.

Another example around the 5 min mark here - I think there are bigger bosses in the game as well.

I did have a quick go on it after my last post and saw for myself. I remember that I really wanted to like this game - which felt more like something on the Spectrum - but felt that the weapons ruined it. There are so many occasions where the guns just cannot hit the enemies and you're forced into taking damage as a result. It's like they were designed for a different game entirely
Aha! Thanks so much for providing proof :D

This looks very exciting! The monochrome has a very Vic20/ZX81 feel to it :)

Anyways, here's the diver fella from Summer Olympiad:

The dude that competes in the triple jump event is also a fair size:

Was just scrolling through this thread and then up came Podd and I laughed out loud! Never thought the big red fella would win a Beeb game record
